The perfect bag. Great details, and a great value. June 12, 2007

We own last year's version of this bag, made by the same manufacturer for Rick as this new one. If the new and improved version is "the same but better", then you can not go wrong by getting this bag. The bag was so good that we bought a second one. Lived out of them for 2-1/2 weeks in Europe last summer. We also bought a set each of the Rick Steves' packing cubes, which exactly fit inside the convertible carry-on bag. Lots of compartments, thoughtfully placed, and some bonus internal cinch-sacks and a "secret" document pouch that clips into the bottom of the bag. More pluses are stow-away backpack and waist straps, side cinch straps, and it is expandable via a wrap-around zipper. The material is strong enough for its use and you will simply not believe how much can be packed into this bag. If you are familiar with Rick's travel philosophy (travel light and carry-on) this is the perfect bag. You will not find a bag with as many thoughtful details as this bag for twice the price - I know because I looked at most of them prior to deciding on Rick's bag. We have had this bag since 1999 and it is still in great shape! We used Rick Steve's navy bag, his books(the best), and his silk money bags on a trip to Europe in 1999. They were all wonderful and we had a trip of a life-time on a budget, thanks to Rick Steves. My husband and I both have the covertable carry-on and this was our "large" bag for our trip. We traveled light across Europe and moved quickly on and off trains and around countries(felt sorry for people with big bags with wheels on stone streets).
My husband now travels monthly and is still using this bag. After all of these years our bags practically look new and are strong and sturdy. This is money well spent for luggage!

I just received it and am impressed already. The Blue Spruce color is much nicer than the picture on here, deeper blue and classy. It came with the shoulder strap which I didn't expect because most places say it must be bought separately. The shoulder/waist straps seem to adjust well to my average female 5'6" body and my breasts don't feel squished. Lots of pockets in various sizes and the included secret pouch and mesh pouches will also come in handy. So far, so good!

I actually purchased a LL BEAN Rucksack and waited for it to arrive before I even opened the package for this. The ruck sack was too small. I am traveling with a 2 year old to Hawaii and will need to carry her things as well as mine. When I opened the Rick STeves I was immediately impressed. I thought it was going to be big and bulky...NOT! THe pockets on the outside are soooooooooooooo deep and roomy and the inside is great, OMG!! It will accomodate everything I need and then some, there are so many pockets. It fits comfortably on my back and the waist belt really secures it comfortably. I will have no problem finding things and manuevering around the airport with a toddler and her stroller.
THis bag is awesome. It came with 2 small white mesh bags and 3 of Rick STeves' cubes...I am very impressed with this product. THe merlot is also a very pretty color.

I picked-up one of these babies for a recent trip to Costa Rica. It was plenty big enough for 12 days worth of clothing (with strategic reusing of certain garments) and it's expansion feature worked great for stuffing in my souvenirs for the trip home. It appears to be of quality construction though curiously one of the zipper pulls was missing. If I had time I would have exchanged it for another but basically bought it the day before I was to leave.
It also has enough pockets and cubbies to organize your travel gear and easily access everything while on the go. I also appreciated converting it into a back-pack which is easier for me to carry than with the handles. In summary, I believe I'll be using this travel bag for many years to come!
