Merkur blades are the best blade choice for double edge safety razors. They are sharp, cut close with no irritation, and remain viable for a few days longer than a typical blade. Most blades last me 5-7 days. I usually get approximately 7+ days with the Merkurs.
Also to note, you can get sharper blades like Feather, but they will cut you up like no other.

My old safety razor has been with me for over 35 years and still going strong, except that it is hard to find blades. Now I am very thankful that Merkur Double Edge Safety Razor Blades are available for they give me a close shave and each blade lasts me for over 8 shaves. My old razor should last for another 35 years!

Now that the new Gillette 5 bladed system is out and the cartridges are $3 each, it's time to go retro. These blades cost you 50 cents each and last longer than a week. Mine last for months. I've used Merkur double edged blades for nearly 20 years. No other brand is as sharp or holds an edge as long. Sure, the shave from a safety razor isn't as close as the new Gillette, but for 6x times the money, there isn't any way you can justify it, unless you are posing for a magazine! If you want to try a double-edged safety razor, this is the blade to use with it.

With the advent of those truly ridiculous multiblade "shaving systems" (oh, no--not "razors"; they're "shaving systems." Feh.), Merkur blades are a welcome standby. They can be had by the full case (20 10-blade packs) for about $80 or $90. And at about a week per blade, even with "two-pass" shaving (once with the grain of the beard and once against it), that's enough for a few years.
I've been using Merkur blades for almost 25 years, and for overall quality and value, I'd say they're the best around. I've found them best when teamed with the Merkur "Progress" adjustable razor. Using both correctly furnishes the best shave next to a straight razor, and without all of the trouble (well, "enjoyment" for the straight razor aficiandoes) inherent in that practice.

Like most others, I fell for all the hype that convinced me that every couple of years, I had to buy the latest, greatest design in razors. With each new design, the blades got more and more expensive until I realized that it was just a gimmick to get more of my hard earned money. About a year ago, I bought a Merkur razor and have not regretted it. If you are a newbie to this type of razor, you may want to start off slow and make minor changes to your technique. Then, enjoy your smooth shave and think about what to do with the extra money in your pocket.
