It delivers a striking design with a surface resembling matte steel, and whose overall rectilinear shape is repeated in patterns throughout the system--from the cut-out speaker grill to the vents on the bottom casing. From the simple step-by-step setup through easy support tools with preinstalled HP Advisor, this F700 notebook gets you up fast and keeps you running. Watch DVD movies on the full screen using HP DVDPlays intuitive media controls, make great movies without the hard work with preinstalled Cyberlink, and edit, store and share photos with Photosmart Essentials. It's powered by the 64-bit 1.9 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 processor, which allows you to easily run multiple programs without slowing down your productivity. Its 15.4-inch WXGA BrightView display supports High-Definition playback and audio enhanced by built-in Altec Lansing speakers. Digital photo management is made easy with preinstalled HP Photosmart Essentials. Other features include a 120 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (3 GB maximum), Nvidia GeForce 7000M graphics/video card with up to 287 MB of shared video memory, a dual-layer DVDRW writer, and a multi-format memory card reader. Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: The 1.9 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PCs capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 256 KB L2 cache (for a 512 KB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) - Hard Drive: The 120 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 20,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (1 x 512 MB DDR2) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It provides two DIMM slots and has a 3 GB maximum RAM capacity. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a full-sized 101-key keyboard and touchpad with four-way scroll zone on/off button and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Screen, Video & Audio The 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition display provides razor-sharp graphics and plenty of room for your widescreen movies, thanks to its 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. Video is powered by the integrated Nvidia GeForce 7000M graphics/video card, which provides up to 287 MB of total available video memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. The built-in Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. You get a very basic offering of connectivity options: - 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- Video out: 1 VGA monitor port and 1 S-Video port (for connecting to a TV or projector)

Great Value Laptop January 22, 2008 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
Perfect for email, web browsing, basic photos, basic videos, music, and word processing. Probably not powerful enough for high end graphics, video editing, or gaming. But, plenty capabale for everyday computing. I've used it to edit and create a home video DVD and it worked very well. What else can I say? For under $500 (home deopot) this is a great value. The screen looks great and feature set is the best I've seen for the price.
Update (7/21/08): I've had this for about six months now... no problems. It's still a nice computer for the money. I made a great 1 hour DVD for my daughter's one year birthday using a ton of high quality pics, videos, and songs and it handled it like a champ. Granted, a really high-end computer might have done it quicker, this guy came through and got it done. I'd still recommend it.
Unbelievable Deal! February 28, 2008 23 out of 25 found this review helpful
Pros: Price to performance ratio, weight, screen, performance (Windows XP or Vista with 2gb+ RAM)
Cons: My only complaints about this product are pretty petty but nonetheless they are: 1.) No ExpressCard ability. I realize HP has to make cuts somewhere to allow for such a low price, but I really would like to have seen this added. Definitely not a deal breaker tho. 2.) MS Vista and HP installed bloatware. Without first uninstalling the bloatware and tweaking Vista, the laptop runs kinda pokey. However after the tweaks mentioned below, the laptop runs Vista pretty well, which is a feat in itself, no matter how good the hardware is. 3.) No official XP downgrade support via HP. I had to franken-force install the audio and modem drivers. Audio works but has quirks (ie-Volume does not mute when headset plugged in.You have to mute, THEN plug headset in which will then disengage the external speakers and allow the headphones to work) also the mic doesn't work. Again, neither bother me too much.
Other Thoughts: This is an AWESOME laptop for the money! Once I uninstalled the HP bloatware, Vista performance improved dramatically. I then disabled search indexing(right click on drive, select properties and uncheck "index this drive for faster searching"; then disabled SuperFetch(Start, type in services.msc and press Enter, Scroll down to SuperFetch and select Disable); and finally disabled all the eye candy via Advance Settings and Performance settings. With the exception of network performance, these simple settings gave Vista about 85% of the peppy'ness of XP. I even went back to full eye candy(re-enabled Aero) and honestly don't see too much of a performance hit1 This hardware setup is amazing for the money! I did, however, setup a Windows XP partition with gparted and am now dual-booting so I have the best of both worlds.See the following for XP downgrade info: http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1204180955784+28353475&threadId=1191678
I have upgraded to 2GB RAM since I originally wrote this review. I also re-enabled SuperFetch and added a 2GB SanDisk Ultra II SD card to enable ReadyBoost. Vista runs so much better now! It's actually usable even with all eye candy enabled. I rarely even go into XP anymore. This laptop really gives my desktop a run for its money! Excellent buy!
Great inexpensive Laptop February 22, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this to use at out church for use with Power Point mostly. I was really afraid of using Vista but found that it was very easy to switch form XP to Vista and now I actually like Vista better. I was very pleasantly pleased with the performance of this computer for the price (under $500 at Office Depot after rebates). I did however find it a little slow so I invested in 2GB of RAM and that really makes a difference. I recommmend doing that if you buy this computer but for the money, it is a great buy. I recommend this to anyone that dosn't need it for high end gaming or anything like that.
Excellent for the $$$ March 30, 2008 I had written a lengthy write-up on this laptop, but the big A never posted it. I had detailed what I did to get the best performance from this machine. Anyhow, long story short, this laptop runs Vista just fine on 1G, but you have to do a lot of tweaking and tuning.
Disable the Vista Aero (unless you get 2G RAM).
The bloatware is a mess on this laptop (as with most PC's these days). Remove all the bloatware (inc. Norton and get a free antivirus like Avast or AVG).
If you are comfortable with editing the registry, there are tons of apps which run on startup. A lot of these are Compaq programs which keep the laptop updated with their latest software.
Like I said, I detailed everything I did but I don't have it in me to type all that again. Anyhow, afterwards, this laptop performed very well on 1G. Very easily as fast as XP.
F755US April 6, 2008 I've had it for more than a month, and it's been pretty functional, the mouse pad and keyboard are really soft. Image quality is great, processor's temperature is fine, i'd say 2 thumbs up! for this computer and the price.
