Amazon.com Product Description The Acer Aspire AS5100-5033 (LX.AX90X.095) is a great choice for mobile professionals who like to play as hard as they work--and who have an eye on the budget. Acer's acclaimed Folio design features chic lines, smooth curves, and a cool metallic sheen, while its slim-and-light form factor facilitates excellent mobility, while front-access ports and controls make connecting to a network convenient. This Aspire 5100 has a bright 15.4-inch LCD that takes advantage of Acer's CrystalBrite set of display technologies, which provide great color saturation and excellent contrast in all environments. Enjoy easy video-conferencing via VVoIP with the integrated Acer OrbiCam webcam (at the top of the LCD panel), which provides a 310,000 pixel resolution and 225-degree rotating motion. The powerful dual-core 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 processor is ready to handle the demanding 64-bit applications that are coming down the pipeline, and will speed you through your work today. Other features include a large 120 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), a multi-format DVD burner, 5-in-1 memory card reader, and integrated 54g Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g). This laptop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: The 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 256 KB L2 cache (for a 512 KB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) - Hard Drive: Above average in size, the 120 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of tens of thousands of songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software.
- Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (2 x 512 MB, 533 MHz) is a good start for power users. But you'll want to take advantage of the roomy 4 GB capacity for working with today's demanding business productivity applications.
- DVD/CD Drive: The multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It offers the following write speeds: 4x for dual-layer DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL; 8x for single-layer DVD-R and DVD+R; 8x for DVD+RW; 6x for DVD-RW; 5x for DVD-RAM; and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW.
- Keyboard & Mouse: The 88-key keyboard offers an inverted T cursor layout, embedded numeric keypad, hotkey controls, international language support, 2.5mm minimum key travel. The touchpad has a four-way integrated scroll button.
Screen, Video & Audio The 15.4-inch WXGA LCD has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and a 200-nit high-brightness LCD with a 16 ms response time. A screen of this size shows 30% more information compared to a 15-inch XGA LCD, offering a generous viewing area for both entertainment and multi-window multitasking. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100, which delivers stable and reliable visual power for business and communications applications, demanding 3-D games, and the coming Windows Vista operating system. It also has an integrated audio card with Microsoft DirectSound and Sound Blaster Pro compatibility for realistic gameplay and movie watching. Acer's CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light and internal ray. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments. It's great for sophisticated professional applications, photo manipulation, and immersive 3-D games. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This Acer notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN (Acer InviLink) that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks and offers Acer's SignalUp technology for enhanced antenna efficiency. GREAT PRODUCT May 2, 2007 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this product from Circuit City and It was well worth it! It has blown away my expectations. It is a lot of bang for your buck. I recommend this to everyone!
Wonderful with XP March 10, 2008 This is a great for the price, with Windows XP. I wouldn't recommend Vista unless you upgrade the memory. I have never had a problem with connectivity, either wired or wireless. I prefer the Turion processor.
Vista? No.. July 27, 2007 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is by no means a bad laptop, the hardware is good. However, windows vista does not run well at all. I ended up uninstalling vista and installing ubuntu linux which runs extremly well. If you want to buy an affordable laptop and replace the OS, this is a good choice
Cool Laptop but Vista is not ready yet April 29, 2007 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I bought this computer last night at a perty good price at Circuit City, $[...] with a [...] dollar rebate down to [...]. I was not impressed with the 64 bit OS. I spent all night downgrading to XP and this laptop seems to be doing very well in XP. Everything works, nice display. Descent machine for the price. I am a graphic designer and bought this mainly for web surfing as a second pc but am running Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Illustrator just fine. I think vista has a long way to go, had problems with almost every program I tried to install in Vista. I installed XP media center and downloaded drivers from acer...4 hour task, and all is smooth and fast. wireless works great and I actually picked up 5 networks besides mine in the neighborhood. I have a dual boot now and will go with vista when programs actually work. I would rate this 4 stars if XP was installed when I bought it. Good to know that when a 64 bit OS is actually ready I can upgrade again.
Almost nothing works in vista.
Buy this Laptop for 600 bucks and downgrade the OS.
Has some problems March 9, 2008 This system came preloaded with windows vista, which sucks. Also, it keeps dropping wireless connectivity regularly.
