Amazon.com Product Review Finding a wall stud behind sheet rock or paneling used to be a hit and miss routine, but the new Zircon stud finders have taken the "miss" out of the equation. The i500 scanner is a five-function scanner that can locate the exact center of a wall stud behind paneling or sheetrock up to 3/4 inches deep or up to 1-1/2 inches deep when set to DeepScan Mode. The scanner can locate copper and other non-ferrous metal up to 1-1/2 inches deep or it can locate ferrous metal such as rebar up to 3 inches deep in concrete. This is a handy feature when repairing cracked or damaged foundation walls. After you have located the wood or metal studs you can set the i500 to AC Tracing or AC WireWarning to locate hot electrical wiring that you want to avoid when nailing or cutting into the wall or ceiling cavity. Even AC wiring incased in plastic conduit cannot hide from the i500. The i500 also includes a large easy-to-read back-lit LCD screen and easy-to-understand, on-screen graphics and an audio signal to indicate the target area. A patented SpotLite Pointing System also shines a bright beam of light over the target's center that is easy to see even when working in low light conditions. Use the i500 to hang cabinets, pictures, mirrors, and shelves or to install ceiling fans, grab bars, and chandeliers. You can also use the i500 to locate metal pipes behind tile or in concrete or to find conduit, rebar, electrical boxes, exhaust vents, and ducting. An important safety feature is the ability of the i500 to locate and trace hot wires behind walls, floors, and ceilings. --D. Barnett

Love this StudSensor January 5, 2006 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I absolutely love the MultiScanner i500. I just purchased a house and used it to hang new cabinents in the kitchen, pictures on the wall, and install curtain rods. It found the studs easily and it shined a light right on the center of the stud.
I tried using it on my mother's house and found that it wasn't working. When I called Zircon, they explained that the unit doesn't work on lathe and plaster. They suggested that I use the metal mode to find the nail head as long as the walls had only wood lathe not metal lathe or mesh. I tried that I was able to find the studs.
I haven't tried the AC mode, but everything I have tried works great. I would definately recommend this product especially to women like myself that find themselves doing home repairs.
A must-buy for the do-it-yourselfer February 12, 2008 This is a must-buy for those who like to hang things on their walls. The ability to mark both the middle and the edge of the stud is priceless. The ability to deep scan and detect electrical lines is also very useful. This is an amazing improvement over my old, simple Zircon stud finder of a few years ago. I highly recommend it.
Wood, metal, wires... it finds them all! September 22, 2008 This stud-finder came highly recommended from a friend that's a contractor, and I've had nothing but good experiences with it. If it says there's a stud in the wall, I can be sure it's there. I've never had a problem with glitches or any of the other quirks the other reviewers point out. It's easy to use, accurate, and makes home improvement just that much easier.
So far, so good October 7, 2006 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've read all the negative reviews, the trick is to calibrate the device, and move slowly, with some patience it will locate the stud, even your AC line, when it says to start on another spot, do so , and calibrate again. It helps to read the instructions too, some good tips in there.

The repeatability of this instrument is very questionable. Repeating the sequence for determining the location of a stud results in the stud being at a slightly different location. The stud obviously does'nt move however the stud finder shows that its not in the same identical spot. For that reaon I'm not to happy with this piece of equipment.
