Amazon.com Product Description
Note: The Toshiba 30HF84 30" TheaterWide HD-Ready Flat-Screen TV is no longer being manufactured. You may want to consider purchasing the newer Toshiba 30HF85 30" Widescreen HD-Ready Flat Screen TV instead.

With its widescreen dimension and wealth of picture-enhancing technologies, Toshiba's remarkably affordable 30HF84 is set to bring you into the digital future. The set sports 2 high-definition component-video inputs and an HDMI direct-digital connection for hookup with a DTV set-top box or HD satellite receiver. What's more, the 30-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks great, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity.

Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 1080i resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals.

DFine high-speed VSM (velocity-scan modulation) also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Finally, Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown reversal) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

As standard video amplifiers increase the gain of the video signal, video bandwidth tends to decrease. This eliminates the higher frequencies, reducing resolution. The 30HF84's wideband video amplifier maintains the higher frequencies, enabling higher resolution and greater sharpness and detail.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can directly select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them.

Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

The set's stereo speakers are powered by 10 watts per channel, and SRS WOW processing combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass low-frequency enhancement, and Focus (which clarifies voices).

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your television. HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

5 out of 5 stars Am I Missing the Boat?   November 4, 2004
10 out of 11 found this review helpful

I bought this TV on September 12th, 2004 and I am not quite sure if I am a moron for not seeing the faults on this TV that others have found. I couldn't be happier with the 30HF84. I currently have HDTV through Comcast and while the channels currently are limited by quantity, the quality is exceptional! I am a HUGE sports fan and have enjoyed watching my Sox win the World Series in HD. I would agree that watching non-HD channels in "Widescreen" may be just ok, the HD is great and DVD's are even better. I find that I only end up watching the major networks and ESPN anyways on HDTV. I didn't have a progessive scan DVD player, so I ended up buying a $39 Cyberhome DVD player from Best Buy and movies look great! I have a Cambridge Soundworks System, so I do not use the speakers at all.

It was toss up between this TV and the Sony 30", but this TV was smaller and less expensive by $100. I was told that Toshiba made the better TV from stores that didn't even carry the Toshiba. My only wish was that I could have convinced my wife to get the 34" model. Oh, well! I agree with one of the prior reviews that this TV is to bridge the gap that plasmas will become more reasonably priced. After having this TV for more than a month, I have become a snob and can not stomach watching a Patriots game on any TV other than mine. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Picture Quality, great price!   January 13, 2005

I don't know why other people had problems. I bought this television and everything looks stunning. HD is mindblowing, and I love the widescreen. My Digital Cable and Xbox are hooked up through the component inputs and everything looks spectacular. Sound is great, and I didn't even have to adjust the picture one bit. The default TV and Movie settings are just fantastic. I highly recommend this TV to anyone on a budget. And because it's CRT, you can view the TV from anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Happy w/my purchase   October 23, 2004

I bought this TV when it was $714 w/free shipping. For what you get, this was an awesome deal. The delay in shipping was a little frustrating. Probably due more to my impatience. It took about 2 weeks.

I'm not sure if my expectations were set too high, or what, but when I finally got home & hooked it all up, I thought 'ok, good picture but what is all the HDTV fuss about?' I think I was expecting to see drastically different picture because of the HDTV. I have had a TV w/component cables connections & always used the best hookups when available. Not sure if my being accustomed to these connections lessened the improvement, but...

After 1 1/2 months of using this TV, I am getting used to HDTV & this monitor, and watching regular TV on my other TV is frustrating. I have gotten used to the stubble, wrinkles & spots on actors faces, to seeing the blades of grass on the football field and all the other details that regular TV seems to not capture. The TV itself has performed very well. Good remote - lights up and includes controls for my DISHnetwork satelite receiver. I have an Xbox with component cables connected & the images are sharp as can be. I use widescreen on a few games and 480p on all that support. I don't own any 1080i or 720p games yet.

I hooked up a uhf antenna to my DISHnetwork 811 receiver, so I can get all NYC digital stations. Reception is great. I was surprised at how much digital content is available.

If I dropped 3 times the price on a nicer TV would I be happier? I might have a better picture, but I would have not liked paying that credit card bill.

UPDATE after 3+ months(1/2/05):
The TV is very solid and I am very pleased with my purchase. I just read thru some of the other reviews, and not sure what is going on. I have not had any problems. My picture quality on local over the air HD or Dishnetwork HD is wonderful. Maybe I am just not as demanding - I am just a regular consumer not some AV-phile - or maybe the bad reviewers got lemons. Whatever the case, I continue to rate this at 5 stars. Hope it helps.

Overall, I have been very satisfied with this TV.

5 out of 5 stars Great Price, Excellent TV   December 9, 2004
9 out of 10 found this review helpful

I bought this TV because it had the biggest HDTV picture that I could fit into my wall unit for the lowest price. When I read some of the other Amazon reviews, I got worried, but fortunately there was nothing to be concerned about in my case. I am thrilled with this TV. The picture is spectacular from both my DVD player and my cable box (I get HDTV programming from Cablevision in NYC). I also hooked it up with top of the line component video cables (from Monster) which is supposed to increase picture quality, but I haven't done any comparison tests. All in all, I can highly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent HDTV Television   October 18, 2004

This is an excellent HDTV.

I purchased the TV at the end of August from Amazon direct.
Shipment was delayed a couple of weeks due to availability.

The shippers called in advance to schedule a date/time. They were right on time and the package arrived in good condition. The shippers also helped set it up in the cabinet which was a big help to me.

I hooked up my progressive scan DVD to the TV using component inputs. The TV powered up fine. DVDs look awesome. Make sure you force your DVD player to 480p.

The cable company then came and brought in their new HDTV and DRV set top box. It is a Motorola 6208. I have it connected to the TV using the second set of component inputs. I eventually want to use the HDMI port on the TV but don't yet have the DVI to HDMI cable. HDTV on the 30hf84 is tremendous. Geometry is spot on. focus is sharp as a tack. Colors are bright and contrast is perfect. The TV comes with 4 default color/contrast modes to choose from. I ended up creating a custom one in which I reduced the contrast to obtain an even better picture than the default modes. Whether its sports, weekly shows, movies, or informational programs, the HD picture is flawless and watching in 16:9 beats the 4:3 mode by a longshot.

Non HDTV digital cable is grainy, especially in 16:9 mode. switch to 4:3 when watching non HD channels.

I have not evaluated the TV's sound package as I use my home theatre audio receiver instead of the TV speakers.

I receommend this TV wholeheartedly...especially at the Amazon price. Its a great TV!
