Perfect choice for a compact 60" 1080p TV June 12, 2007 30 out of 31 found this review helpful
We spent about 3 months researching and looking at TVs that were at least 58", 1080p, and that had bright clear image quality and wide viewing angles. None of the LED TVs came close to meeting the size requirement so we nixed them. All the DLP and LED DLP rear projection TVs seemed very dim and could not be viewed at wide angles (although their prices were right). The ony plasma that was 1080P and at least 58" was way too expensive, although it did have awesome picture quality.
We were about to give up and wait for the price of the plasma TVs to drop, when we stumbled across the Sony XBR2. This was the only rear projection set we could find that had an image that came close to plasma quality. The only negatives was that it had a lot of extra features that drove up the price (like PIP) that we did not care about and took up a huge amount of space (24" deep and 71" wide). Since we really liked this TV, we overlooked the negatives and bought it.
While it did look big in the store, once it was delivered to our living room, it became a gargantuan dinosaur. It dwarfed our living room and we ended up visiting 5 furniture stores trying to find a stand that was big enough. To make a long story short, the size and weight of this beast was too much and we decided to return it and wait for the plasma prices to drop.
While we made the trip back to the store, we stumbled across the Samsung HL-T6176S (which had just been released that very day). We were amazed that this 61" DLP TV had:
1) Outstanding, near plasma picture quality 2) Was not dim like the other LED DLP rear projection TVs 3) Could be viewed at a wide angle (not quite as wide as plasma though) 4) Was 600$ less expensive than the Sony XBR2 (which was the best rear projection set we had found so far) 5) Was almost as compact as a plasma set! This set could be easily mistaked for an LED/Plasma. Samsung did a brilliant job of not wasting any space. You can hardly even see the bezel surrounding the picture! 6) Had plenty of inputs, connections, and features without the useless bells and whistles that drive the price up.
The only real negatives are that the remote was not nearly as intuitive/nice as the remote we got with the Sony XBR2 and the picture is a little less bright than the XBR2 was, but still leaps and bounds brighter than the other DLP units we looked at.
In summary, if you are dissapointed in the picture quality of the current DLP rear projections, small size of LED, high price for plasmas, and the huge size of the top of the line rear projection set (like the Sony XBR2), then this TV fits the bill. It does the best job of juggling picture size, quality, compactness, and price of any set we have seen (and we have seen them all).
Excellent Television August 22, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I just set up the TV in my family room and it is definitely a thing of beauty. I was a little concerned about the quality after reading previous posts on this product and how little reviews were written. I have not experienced any bowing to the picture or any major or minor defects. I think the negative posts that were written are somewhat inaccurate. Before I bought this TV I did a lot of homework and found that the new LED 61", the hlt6187s, has a great picture and a reliable LED bulb but I thought the hlt6176s had a better accuracy with the color. However, I did like that it had a LED bulb, but I don't think reviewers should vote this product down because of that. Overall, outstanding product, and thanks to Amazon for the no sales tax and free shipping. Keep up the good work.
Samsung 61" -1080p DLP July 27, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I shopped around at the local chain stores like Best Buy, Circuit City and HH Gregg before finding this TV on Amazon's website. I was somewhat reluctant to buy a major item like this on-line but the price was so good, I decided to go through with it. The TV arrived a few days earlier than promised and it looks great. The delivery guy was very friendly and helped un-box everything. He offered to take away the boxes and set up the TV but I opted to do that myself.
I'm very pleased with the purchase so far. I highly recommend this to others!
Great TV August 20, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This TV has a great picture. It was actually delivered earlier than expected. It would be hard to beat the price for a TV this size!!
Great DLP Set January 29, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm not going to quote specs....go to the SAMSUNG site for that crap. This is my second SAMSUNG DLP set (other is S5086W, purchased about 1 yr ago). I'm not here to argue the virtues of LCD vs DLP vs LCoS...they're all a great means to the same end.....a superb picture for our viewing pleasure. My 50" set is doing fine.....it's now in the hands of a buddy who really needed a TV upgrade (yep, I rationalized my TV upgrade...he just helped me out by buying the 50" set at a discounted price). I upgraded to the bigger 61" set....I really like the 1080p image---especially from my Sharp Blu-ray. The 50" image was nice, but the 720p (or converted 1080i) just wasn't as good as the 6176S 1080p display. For MY eyes the picture is outstanding. The colors are vivid, the picture clear and sharp. Now, as to this bowing issue...well, I've watched closely...ESPN, Bloomberg, etc and I'm not getting the effect. Does that mean the image is perfect...hell no.....but for the $1500 price I paid I'd say it's pretty damn good. The LED engine units are becoming the rage so these non-LED lamp units are getting cheaper by the day. You can get replacement lamps at a discount, and I would expect the price to get lower. If you get this set, pick up the extra lamp if you're at all worried and you've got a TV that will last longer than you might think (like double-digit years)--and by that time I'm sure we'll be watching displays much cooler than LCD, DLP, and LCos. Should you buy this set? Don't do it based on my review....go see one for yourself and compare. The DLP presentation may not be what you're looking for....maybe LCD, Plasma, or LCos will be more to your liking. This unit as a great picture, quiet operation, and an attractive price that will get better over the coming months. Check it out and grab one if the mood strikes you.....I just don't think you'll be disappointed.
FYI...in the pix lineup "see larger image and other views" section, the first frontal view pic is not this set, but the next three pix correctly show this particular set.
