More than specs would imply April 26, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I picked up one of these at Target primarily because of the price; it was a clearance item. I'm a bargain hunter by nature and necessity. I admit I wasn't expecting much for the money, but I was mistaken.
Though Nickelodeon branded, it is an Imation/Memorex product and pretty well-built. It doesn't have too many buttons and its design is attractive and functional. Though targeted for children, it is large enough to be held comfortably by an adult.
The built-in USB rechargeable battery still had enough life in it at the time of purchase to bring the device to life and surprise me by the brightness and sharpness of the screen. It held three Nickelodeon video previews which ran smoothly and with surprising clarity for an item built for the younger set. It plays WMV (Windows Media Video)only, but Windows Media Player 10 or above will convert many video formats when you sync to the device, so it's not a big problem. There are also SD cards available with episodes of Nick shows on them, if you so desire.
Oh, yes, the specs didn't point this out but in addition to the built-in gigabyte of internal memory, there is an SD expansion slot tucked away at the bottom. When you sync to Media Player 10 you can sync media to either the internal or external memory easily. With flash memory so cheap these days, your storage capacity is virtually limitless.
I popped in an SD card full of pre-loaded MP3s and the device immediately recognised this and I could play songs with ease. The volume isn't quite as high as one some devices---I am sure to protect tiny ears from damage---but it is loud enough. The built-in equalizer also which comes in handy.
So for the money, I give this little device a pretty good rating. I can play music, download the latest home-video to show friends and co-workers, run a slide-show of family pics and play a couple of simple Java-based games all for less than a c-note.
