Xbox 360 sets a new pace for digital entertainment. More than just a cutting-edge game system, Xbox 360 also integrates high-definition video, DVD movie playback, digital music, photos, and online connectivity into one sleek, small tower, and in the process puts true Next-Gen power right at your fingertips.
Xbox 360 with wireless controller
Xbox 360, shown with wireless controller, is a sleek, customizable gaming and entertainment system

Under the Hood
Xbox 360 is much smaller than its predecessor--it measures approximately 3.3 by 12.2 by 10.2 inches and weighs 7.7 lbs. It's powered by custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU with three symmetrical cores each running at 3.2 GHz. It also carries a custom ATI graphics processor loaded with 10 MB of embedded DRAM, 48-way parallel floating-point dynamically scheduled shader pipelines and Unified shader architecture. This is powerful enough to draw 500 million triangles per second. In other words, it makes for great looking games in standard TV definition, and even better thanks to built-in support for HDTV 1080i televisions. It also supports the widescreen 16:9 format.

The unit has a 12x dual-layer DVD-ROM drive, which plays both the game media and progressive-scan DVD movies right out of the box. For game-save and media storage, users can choose between the detachable and upgradeable 20GB hard drive, or a separately sold 64MB flash Memory Unit. Along with storing files, the hard drive will make the Xbox 360 backward-compatible with part of the existing Xbox game library.

Control your Gameplay
Xbox 360 uses a refined button layout for its controllers. Back and Start buttons sit at the center of the controller and between them is a new Xbox Guide button, which instantly takes the user to the Xbox 360 user interface. From there, they can check for friends online, access personal digital content like photos and songs, and more. The black and white buttons of the first Xbox controllers have been replaced with new shoulder buttons placed above the left and right triggers. Xbox 360 can accommodate up to four wireless controllers and has three USB 2.0 slots to use for wired controllers or for streaming your digital media from digital cameras, MP3 players, and any Windows XP-based PC. Microsoft has also created a video-conferencing camera, sold separately, that will work with the system.

Xbox 360 can manage your games, your online friends, and your personal digital library

The Media Experience
All Xbox 360 titles can be played in either standard or high-definition resolution in 16:9 widescreen, with anti-aliasing for smoother graphics. Game designers will be able to take advantage of the system's multi-channel surround sound. The Xbox 360's digital media allows users to supplement any game's music from tracks in their own personal library.

Go Live
A built-in Ethernet port allows users to connect their system to a broadband connection for access to Xbox Live. The Xbox Live Silver Membership included with the console lets anyone create a Gamertag and gamer card to express your online identity, chat live with voice chat, and connect to the Xbox Live Marketplace to buy expansions, maps, and other digital items for your games. You can also update to a Xbox Live Gold Membership at anytime for even more benefits. The separately sold wireless adapter supports the common 802.11a, -b, and -g standards.

5 out of 5 stars NOT the new 65nm!!   August 13, 2007

At this time, the new revision with HDMI is NOT, I repeat, NOT the new Falcon chipset with 65nm, which would lead to less heat and supposedly less Red Ring of Doom. It has the same innards as Xbox 360 Elite, except the smaller hard drive; it's a Zephyr. This revision however does have quieter BenQ drive.

If you are thinking about buying an Xbox, wait for the Falcon chipset which should be out in 2-3 months.

5 out of 5 stars Blown away by this system   August 27, 2007

Let me start by saying that I own 2 Wiis and love that system. I bought the 360 after the price drop and because it has HDMI and an extra heat sink. Plus with the 3 year warranty there really is very little risk. I ordered it from Amazon Prime for overnight on Friday (1.99) and it came by noon on Friday.

I have now played it over 20 hours and am blown away by the system. I did not even buy a game, yet spent hours playing some of the literally 99 demos they offer of full 360 games (such as Bioshock and Madden 08). Plus I played many other demos for the games in Live Arcade (every arcade game has a demo). I loved Geometry Wars and bought it for 5 bucks. I also downloaded a HD version of 300 (4.50) and an episode of Star Trek (2.00). I have never had so much fun with a system before without even buying a game.

As for the system, it works perfectly and the fan makes virtually no sound. I was agonized over whether to buy now or wait for the 65nm chip and am so glad I took the plunge. The warranty makes it easy. I cannot imagine not having this system.

5 out of 5 stars Xbox 360...   August 24, 2007

First of all I WILL not point out the differences between the three SKU of the 360. Now, onto the review.
The Xbox 360 is one phenomenal gaming system. It is cheaper than the PS3, yet offers the same graphical capabilities and more games. However, the PS3 has a blu-ray player, and will have some great games coming out in the future.
The quality of the hardware is something to be a bit concerned about. The 360 has a big amount of problems that can occur. These include overheating and the famous Red Rings of death, which mean your system has failed. But when the newer systems are coming out with extra heatsinks, and in the near future the 65 nm chips, then its not a big of a concern. And there's a 3 year warranty for the red rings of death.
The Xbox 360 is playable right of the box, whether you get the Elite, Core, or Pro. Just set it up, put a game in, and you're ready to go.
The breakdown:

Games: 10/10 - 2 years in, and its got a huge amount of games: Rainbow Six Vegas, Gears of War, PGR3, Dead Rising, Saints Row, Lost Planet, Prey, Forza Motorsport 2, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3, and more. Plus, the future looks brigt with: Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Burnout Paradise, Too Human, Bioshock, Gears of War 2, Alan Wake, Assasin's Creed, and many, many more great games.

Graphics: 10/10 - Both of the current games and future games look to have some of the best graphics ever. Mass Effect and Call of Duty 4 shine in the graphics department, and currently theres Lost Planet and Gears of War, which showcase what the 360 can do.

Design: 7/10 - From overheating, to melting, to the Red Rings of Death, to the big power supply, plenty of things are wrong with the design. But thee physical design is awesome. It's sleek, and the color makes it look modern.

Ease of Use: 8/10 - Setting up to online may be a bit of a hassle, but the games work right out of the box. The dashboard is a great and easy way to use the 360.

Overall: 8.5/10(not an average) - Although it may have a fair share of design flaws, but the 360 still manages to be a wonderful gaming console.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic picture with hdmi   September 24, 2007

As has been heard, this is the new console under the new price that INCLUDE the hdmi port. Basically this console is what the 'Elite' version is, just without the hard drive size. For the price and the hdmi port this is by far the best console for what you get.

The picture this produces on hdmi is fantastic. My first game was bioshock and I was absolutely stunned by the crisp, smooth graphics on my hdtv. I first hooked it up with regular av, then component, and finally the hdmi. If you aren't playing with hdmi, you are missing out on some details in games such as bioshock that just can't be seen under regular av cables. The drops of water on the camera, the shine of the lights reflected off the blood on the floor, the wisp of smoke coming from your gun... the list could go on and on.

I know there are still concerns about the heat issue for xbox360. I have so far played a fair amount of time both as an accumulation of hours as well as in one sitting. The machine does become warm to the touch, especially at the back of the air vents. I would imagine that the inside is even hotter, however I have not had the dreaded 'rings of death' yet. And I have played bioshock, gears of war, and mforza2. All of which are graphic intensive and cause the box to heat even faster.

So far I have not been dissapointed at all in my purchase and buying it through amazon at no tax and no shipping fee is even better than buying it locally.

5 out of 5 stars The nintendo fanboy's pick.   September 23, 2007

For many years I've been a nintendo fanboy actually still am, but nintendos choice to take a different direction this generation has forced me to pick between the two competitors to get most of the next gen titles. The price, graphics and game selection made the 360 the best choice.
