5 out of 5 stars Great pictures, classy prose and a sense of history   January 16, 2002

If I was 19, maybe R&T wouldn't be my first pick as best damn car magazine on the planet. However, I'm a bit past that age and I think it is and here's why. They have John Lamm - a great photographer and someone I would love to have teach me how to do what he does. They have Phil Hill - a very good writer who can tell you about a car's history and make it come alive to where you can smell the bean oil and burning rubber. Add in Peter Egan, another of their talented writers. I would buy the magazine if it were only 5 pages long and three were by Egan, with two pages of pictures by John Lamm, illustrating a Phil Hill road test. It's a hell of a great magazine. How great? My subscription extends back to the Jimmy Carter Administration.

5 out of 5 stars Automotive Journalism at its best   December 28, 2004

I'm a subscriber to Road & Track, Car and Driver, and Motor Trend. Simply put, R&T is the one I look forward to the most each month.

If you're looking for a well-rounded auto magazine, this is it. In R&T you'll find:
-Road Tests and First Drives.
-An excellent "Ampersand" monthly feature with all the latest info on future cars and prototypes.
-News about the latest races and drivers.
-Top-notch photography and art.
-Witty columnists. (see Side Glances by Peter Egan)
-The occasional technology-related feature.
-Classic cars, classic drivers, classic tracks. The best historical content in the business.
-Very little content on SUVs. (a positive in my book)

The competitors:
Car and Driver has substantially more road tests and previews, and some good specialty features on a pretty regular basis, but hardly anything on racing and history.

Frankly, Motor Trend isn't anything to write home about. The articles are shorter and less captivating, they can't seem to settle on a design theme, and they also have a lack of racing and historical content.

If I had to pick just one, Road & Track would definitely be my choice.

5 out of 5 stars Best monthly car rag   October 20, 2002

Like everyone else, I have read them all over the last 15-20 years. But Road & Track is the one that I have consistently subscribed to over that time. R&T offers the least biased, most informative articles and comparisons out there. Car and Driver on the other hand, seems heavily biased towards Honda and BMW (I call it the Lemming Factor) and their comparisons are overly subjective. R&T's format, photography and writing are 2nd to none and the monthly columns and auto news bits are entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for the Car Nut   November 29, 2001
This is the best monthly Mag. for the "Car Person". I have been reading this pub. for over 30 years. Great reviews, test and long term test. this would be a great gift item for that car nut .

5 out of 5 stars the magazine for TRUE auto enthusiasts   March 1, 2003
3 out of 5 found this review helpful

this is without a doubt the BEST non-specific car magazine out there. it features all the topics any true automobile afficionados would love to read about, new cars, test drives, upcoming tidbits, motorsport, racing history, classic cars, and technical reviews. it is also a very beautiful magazine, with wonderful pictures and illustration. it also has the best features i've ever come across in any car magazine, written by true auto enthusiasts like peter egan, whose eloquent writings about automobile are just unmatched. this is the best! automobile magazine is the worst.
