5 out of 5 stars The most solid magazine for Film & Digital photography   June 13, 2005
17 out of 18 found this review helpful

I subscribed to multiple photography magazines at first when I started getting serious about photography. I subscribed to 'Photography' and 'American Photo' and this one, Popular Photography and Imaging.

Of the three this magazine has the most balanced amount of reviews, 'how tos', digital imaging related topics (Photoshop, etc) as well as some nice contests. Also they seem to sponsor more 'mentor series' type products where you can go to some locale and shoot photos for a reasonable fee.

Of all the magazines this also had something that was important to me - half the magazine isn't ads. Photography was the worst offender of this, there'd be 50 or so pages of weak articles, and then 50 pages solid of ads. While this one does have a chunk of ads near the back, it still has a 'back page' article and articles mixed in among the ads. And only 25% of the magazine is advertisements.

They also support a nice online website (popphoto.com) and have a forum where people can logon and ask questions. While not as heavily trafficked as say dpreview.com the authors and editors do read and respond to questions. Overall a great magazine for the hobby.

5 out of 5 stars THE PROFISSIONAL MAGAZINE FOR EVERY PHOTOGRAPHER.   November 19, 2002

"Popular Photography"("and imaging"/to be added from 1/2003) magazine is a professionals oreinted magazine that can also be read by amateur photographers. Five stars should not reserved only for magazines like the non-popular & expensive "APERTURE". POP-photo deserve 4.5 to 5 stars at least. I had its issues for several years from the stand befor I become a regular subscriber few years ago. I found it deep and thorough, covering every aspect in photography and speaks a profissional photographic language. I rely on the equipment tests that displayed in the magazine, and accordingly I spent around $25000 in equipments depending on their tests, and I'm maximally satisfied. It features some of the greatest photographers in the world now adays showing their works and experience. The magazine contributors and columnist are highly profissional, keen to provide the useful knowledge and sensitive and very responsive to their readers. The advertising part is little long, but the magazine cannot continue without it. The technical part(which the magazine is concentrating on)is very important for maturation of the photographers visualization process which is involved in every photographic action. IN SUMMARY: one of the best if not the best world widely known general photographic magazine. A good complementary to this magazine is the OUTDOORphotographer magazine.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent magazine for every level of photographer   January 17, 2008
Wow. I subscribed to this one and Shutterbug. This one is packed full of tips, techniques and ideas that even a beginner can use. So far I like it a bit better than Shutterbug. But together they make a great arsenal for learning digital photography. I look forward to more issues of PopPhoto.

5 out of 5 stars to begin and continue with   January 16, 2004

i heard of this magazine even before i came to this country and it never disappointed me ever since i subscribed it. i valued it most among other photography magazines i subscribed to. the reason is that i find this magazine have "real stuff". for equipment, it has a detailed and objective test. the articles are not just obscure evaluation u find elsewhere, for instance, it once said:"...based on our field and lab test, this amateur lens gives a better performance than its professional counterpart...", whereas in other magazines, what u find probably is "this lens is good, and that one is nice...". for photo tips, it is more insightful than just "sunny 16" or "always use a tripod". u can find the photographer's own consideration as to why put the composition this way but not that. in all, i think this magazine is for anyone who is interested in photography to begin and continue with

5 out of 5 stars Excellent content on techniques and gear   January 4, 2004

I love the equipment reviews along with photo articles. This magazine would be useful for photographers at any level, mainly because of the new equipment and film reviews, but also for lessons and refreshers in technique.
