5 out of 5 stars One of the best photography magazines I've seen.   September 8, 2004

After having subscribed to Peterson's Photographic for several years, I'm now hooked on this new magazine and am going to let the old subscription lapse. I've gotten tired of all the articles targeted at beginners. Digital Photo Pro digs into the meat of photography a little deeper. Some examples of articles which I've enjoyed are discussions of how digial imaging sensors work and how ink jet printers work. In the most recent issue is a good article on using the unsharp mask in Photoshop. Also, I've enjoyed the large section on new products in each issue.

One caveat is that there is some nudity. You may or may not find this objectionable (my wife is in the former category :). Also, there is usually an article on glamour photography or glamour photographers in each issue. Even if this isn't your cup of tea, there is still good stuff to learn in those articles.

The magazine is beautifully published with very high quality paper and printing. It's also nice and big.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting cover to cover.   March 26, 2006

What I like about this magazine is that the articles are unique and informative. I have bought the last three issues and can't wait for the next one. This magazine covers equipment in a current mode rather than a 6 months to a year behind style so familiar with many of the other photography magazines.
This magazine provides me some much needed diversion because it captures my attention each time I have picked one up. Every article is telling me about or showing me how to implement the lastest techniques from the best photographers in the industry.
At the beginning of this year I noticed that some of the "popular" or "modern" "digital review" magazines were running the same old head to head comparisons of consumer cameras that have been out for the better part of a year now.
I need to see the technology that is cutting edge or even around the corner.
So far this magazine is giving me the best bang for my buck.
Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best General-Interest photography magazine   June 19, 2007

Beginning in the mid 1960's, I grew up with titles like Popular Photography, Modern Photography and Camera 35 (boy do I miss that one...). Then as now, these magazines often targeted the same readership and skill level. Therefore, it did not take long to reach a point (as will most people who love photography and stick with it for more than a few years) where boredom set in with most of the mainstream magazines. I don't need another article on "What Pros Carry in Their Gadget Bags" or "How to Take Better Photos By Using a Tripod." Nor do I need a ten page Photokina walkaround because I read all that stuff online two months ago. And please spare me yet another Buyer's Guide Special Issue that gives me one tiny hard to read line of information on each and every consumer camera that I have absolutely no intention of buying. Most of these magazines are great for the folks who are just getting into photography but for the rest of us there's too little meat, too much repetition, too many ads.

I'll admit, there are a few amazing magazines out there... most of the best ones are the art magazines like Black and White or Aperture... short on technical information but great for inspiration. And many of them go the extra mile when it comes to print quality and paper. And they're expensive.

What the world needs is a general interest photo magazine that is written for the professional and advanced amateur... one that has a nice mix of technology, techniques and well-reproduced samplers of contemporary work by both established and promising photographers. For a while, Photo Electronic Imaging filled the bill nicely, but it was subscription only and the lack of newstand sales finally killed them. Digial Photo Pro arrived on the scene just in time to fill the void. By publishing a few early articles targeted at studio photographers and owners of high-zoot medium format digital equipment in the first few issues they established from the start their intent to serve the serious photographer. In the years since they have seldom disappointed, aside from the fact that they remain a bimonthly publication. After I'm done reading each issue, I'll get to a point (long before the next issue arrives) where I want more, so naturally I head off to the bookstore hoping that one of the other mainstream magazines has decided to publish something of interest. I don't know why I bother: "We Pick the Best Printer for Under $100." "How to Shoot Great Sunsets." Please...

Go ahead and subscribe to this one. I'm not saying it's the only photography magazine that you'll ever want or need, but it could well be the one that disappoints the least... and that makes getting each and every issue worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars I look forward to it every month   February 12, 2008

I always find this magazine well written and informative. I enjoy it from cover to cover. It is geared towards the professional (or wannabe professional) photographer. The review of equipment and software are great, the showcase of up and coming photographers is inspiring and the images in the magazine are of high quality. Personally it is my favorite photography mag.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better digital photography magazines   December 23, 2005

Even though there seem to be hundreds of different digital photography magazines on the newsstand every month, Digital Photo Pro is pretty much the only one that I buy. I don't buy every issue, but seeing as I end up buying about 80% of the issues, I should probably get a subscription!

I like Digital Photo Pro because it actually contains new and useful information. "New" because it's information that I haven't read in another magazine or on the web, and "useful" because the information is targeted at readers with a solid understanding of the basics of digital photography. I find that most other digital photography magazines are targeted at newbies, and they take turns repeating the same information (like the endless articles about the different ways to convert a colour image to black & white). Many of the contributors to Digital Photo Pro are well-known names in the digital imaging field, so the information is generally current and practical, with excellent photos to illustrate the articles.

Recommended.
