5 out of 5 stars Best magazine for entertainment buffs.   April 22, 2002

If you are an entertainment buff, like myself, then you will really enjoy the ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY magazine. EW always has the latest information about music, movies, TV shows, and celebrities. It gives you tons of great, glossy photos. This magazine does not have too much gossip--they have some, but most of the information that they give is true. I also love going to their website--the website is very cool and informative, too.

I especially love EW's special issues, like when they do Oscar coverage or a complete issue on a certain highly anticipated movie. They've also got reviews from the latest CDs, movies, TV shows, and books. And this is a weekly magazine, so you get a new issue every week--not just every month. EW Magazine is a good size as well...it is not too thick and not too skinny. The magazine is made from top-qaulity paper, and just a plain great entertainment magazine. Whenever I'm looking for the latest Hollywood/music industry news and gossip--I always turn to the ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Magazine, because I know I can trust it!

So for all you entertainment buffs, I highly recommend this magazine. To me, it is well-worth the subscription price!

5 out of 5 stars Don't you ever relax?   June 11, 2003

Don't you ever relax? Do you ever do or read anything just for fun?

This was a question asked of me recently in an e-mail from someone who has read several of my reviews. I am happy to say that, yes, I do relax; yes, I do have fun; yes, I do like to be entertained. To this end, another (real-life) friend who worried on the same matter a few years ago gave me a subscription to something he said, 'I think you really need!'

He gave me a subscription to 'Entertainment Weekly'.

This is, I will admit, not the kind of magazine I am likely to pick up in the bookstore. I usually head for the science or the news shelf, sometimes the arts. I don't tend to look at the more 'fluff' magazines. I don't have time.

I guess I do need to relax a bit more.

Anyway... This magazine is a weekly look at music, movies, television, pop & trade books, and to a lesser extent other events. It is not in any way geared toward an intellectual crowd. Sometimes that is a blessing! The cover week has the N'Sync group member Justin (and yes, I knew who they were even before this edition). The headline screams (and this is the kind of magazine for screaming headlines) THE BIGGEST ALBUM! THE SUMMER'S HOTTEST TOUR! Shall I run out and get my tickets now?

Another recent article I recall is one on the-abusive/now-supposedly-reformed Shannen Dougherty, late of 90210 fame and Hollywood temper-tantrum infamy. Yes, I knew who she was before this article, too.

Then, to top it off, an article on Gladiator, appropriately entitled Toga! Toga! Toga! -- living in a college town, I am familiar with the cultural reference. I do appreciate that while this magazine does not aspire to the Bill Buckley/George Will set, it is not avowedly anti-intellectual: the article on Gladiator examines which parts are fact and which fiction in the film/dvd.

I don't have cable nor do I have an antennae on my television that picks up anything other than PBS, so this magazine helps to keep me 'culturally aware' of what's out there (I would have missed the 'Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire' controversy altogether had it not been for this magazine; of course, thinking about it, I'm not sure if that's a credit or a drawback). I like to see the popular reviews of movies (those with more of an angle toward entertainment value as opposed to artistic and cinematic merit), and I like to read the articles on the latest music, though I must confess with each successive issue, I recognise fewer and fewer names (actually, to be honest, I recognise fewer and fewer musical 'styles').

I also use this magazine to keep track of when videos I want to see will be released.

I appreciated the article on Alexander Godunov, the Soviet ballet star turned actor, in the Encore column recently; they do not concentrate on just the mega-stars, and that is a plus.

In short, this is a crucial part of my weekly diversions from the more serious reading material I find myself usually surrounded by, and I am thankful to my friend who continues to provide subscriptions. I am a happier person for it.

5 out of 5 stars Wins the award for most improved magazine EVER   October 26, 2001

I've been reading Entertainment Weekly for about 4 years now, and it seems to get better as each year goes by. If you're an entertainment junkie, then this magazine will feed your head with what you need. Movies & Television get the lion's share of the coverage, but Music & Books, the internet, and even theater get decent coverage as well.

The reviewers are fairly consistent, so if you find you agree with their opinions, you can reliably use their reviews to make decisions about what movies you want to see each weekend, and the television coverage does a good job pointing out the highlights of the coming week.

As for articles & interviews, they tend to be very good to excellent, and go into details on the BIGGER upcoming events (event movies, big TV events, etc.). Finally, the last page of the magazine (Encore) is a fun way to end the magazine. The feature looks back at "this week in history" and covers the events of this magazine's covered week so!me time in the past.

I recommend this magazine to anyone interested in the subject matter...

5 out of 5 stars Big Hub-Bub......Huge Savings.....   December 10, 2003
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

All the Hollywood hub-bub that's fit to print(and some that's not) is packed into every issue of this weekly magazine. If you or someone you know likes to know the latest in the world of movies, music, TV, books and what those unpredictable celebs are up to, you'll be right on top of things and in the know immediately.

Articles on up and comers, big stars(is that wedding on or off?),reviews of new movies, books and music, what's hot on TV this week(what are those crazy 'survivors' up to this week?), what's in , what's out,(or in some cases who's in and who's out)are among the highly entertaining entries. You'll know when that classic movie you've been waiting for to be released to DVD will be in stores, and what CD's are at the top of the charts.Weekly features include style, monitor(who got engaged, married, arrested etc), box office list toppers and TV ratings.

"Entertainment Weekly" is a fun and light read that will keep the entertainment buff in the know and up to date on all the dish and disses, all the picks and pans. For yourself, or as gift you can't go wrong for the price of this weekly subscription. The savings is huge by buying it this way.

It may not be the type of magazine you will keep forever, but it's one that you may pass on to your Doctors office, or let the kids use the pictures for school projects. 5 Stars for a great package deal!

Hooray for Hollywood.....enjoy....Laurie

5 out of 5 stars My favorite magazine!   August 14, 2004

EW is THE definitive weekly entertainment magazine. While I usually disagree with the movie reviews by Lisa Schwartzman and Owen Gleiberman, they are fun to read and laugh at. The rest of the magazine is terrific, with entertainment news up the wazoo; informative and newsworthy. The magazine covers everything, from movies to books to music to television and more. They also have a very fun pop culture quiz in most issues. The addition of the new Stephen King column is a big plus, and one of the highlights. The "Special" issues of the magazine are terrific and a must for any movie fan. I look forward to receiving my EW every Friday morning and don't know what I'd do without it. Movie fans, subscribe now!
