It's no coincidence that Michael Bubl's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bubl means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bubl so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bubl co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. It's also the only song on the album produced by Bob Rock (best known for his work with Metallica), sending out a strong signal that Bubl should reach out to unlikely collaborators more often. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Caught in the Act

Album Description
Melding the contemporary and the classic in ways only he can, Michael Buble has created his most complete studio effort yet. Ranging from "I've Got The World On a String" to "Me and Mrs. Jones," in addition to two new songs co-written by Michael, Call Me Irresponsible makes this album irresistible.

Album Description
Japanese pressing of the crooner's 2007 album includes one bonus track, 'Love' . His first two studio albums went platinum and double platinum, and his rendition of Feeling Good sparked the song's return to standards status. Now Michael Buble offers his most complete studio effort yet, Call Me Irresponsible. Melding the contemporary and the classic way as only he can, the album ranges from I've Got The World On A String, That's Life and the title track to Leonard Cohen's I'm Your Man, Gamble & Huff's Me And Mrs. Jones, Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight and two new songs co-written by Michael. With Call Me Irresponsible, Michael Buble becomes irresistible. Warner.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD   July 15, 2007

This CD was such a great purchase. I'd heard "Everything" on the radio but didn't know who sang it and was asking everyone I knew if they knew the song. Luckily, I heard it on the radio again a few days later and I'd ordered it before the song had finished as I loved it so much. Even though I bought the CD for just one song, the rest of it is so great also. "Lost" has such moving lyrics and such a beautiful tune and then there's some great big band numbers.

If you like this genre of music, you'll love this CD.

I bought this CD last week on the insistence of my teenage son, while we were visiting Toronto. This was definitely a good buy and we've simply been enjoying every single track on this CD. Truly talented, Michael Buble has artistically show-cased is vocal skills on this fantastic CD. My most favourite tracks are #8 Wonderful Tonight, #9 Everything, #2 It Had Better be tonight, #13 Dream, #3 Me and Mrs. Jones, #5 Comin' Home Baby and #12 That's Life. This CD will definitely be my choice this year for Christmas gifts to some special friends on my list! Keep up the good work. . .best wishes from SUNNY BARBADOS.

5 out of 5 stars One Cool Cat   June 28, 2007

I have been a fan of Michael Bubl since his self-titled debut album. With each CD Michael makes, I find myself falling more in love with his voice, and this cd is no exception. My favorite song is on the album is "Everything." I was so happy to hear the song on the Top 40 radio stations, and was extremely happy when I caught the video on Vh1. You know you are one cool cat when you have Whoopi Goldberg and Bono from U2 making cameos in a music video. Michael makes "the big band sound" cool.

5 out of 5 stars It's so good, I can't pick a favorite song!   May 3, 2007

This is by far the best work that Michael Buble has done. I was very impressed with this album. It is very rare to have a c.d so good that you don't feel the need to skip any tracks while listening. I haven't turned it off since I recieved it two days ago! It's hard to even pick a favorite song, they are all SOOO good. It's just a fantastic album!

"I'm your man" is the sexiest song I think I've ever heard. If I was a smoker, I'd need a cigarette after listening to this song!

5 out of 5 stars Michael sells his songs without even trying--he's THAT good !!!   March 29, 2008

Call Me Irresponsible was bound to hit the charts when Michael Bubl released this fine album. Michael's work is outstanding and he easily can match any crooner of the entire twentieth century! The sound quality is excellent and I love that artwork, too!

The album starts with Michael singing "The Best Is Yet To Come;" this number sounds fresh with its big band style arrangement and Michael never sings a superfluous note! Michael's voice is in excellent form and the music complements his vocals perfectly. "It Had Better Be Tonight" has a Latin flavor that works wonders for this ballad; and the brass helps the melody along, too. Michael sings this love song with energy and enthusiasm and this truly amazes me! It's a very strong number that Michael easily aces.

"Me And Mrs. Jones" is a fine cover by Michael Bubl who sings this passionately with all his heart and soul. His voice is smoother than silk and you'll want to slow dance with your sweetheart to this tune. "Comin' Home Baby" is a fine duet between Michael and Boyz II Men; they harmonize and sing this number wonderfully! The piano arrangement really shines and this number is easily a major highlight of this CD.

"Call Me Irresponsible," the title track of this album, places Michael front and center--and he sings this marvelously. The musical arrangement makes good use of the brass and it all works very well. "Everything" is yet another fine tune that Michael Bubl sings to perfection, listen for "Everything;" it's a beautiful ballad.

"I've Got The World On A String," a Harold Arlen number, sounds fresh and new--Arlen would be proud! The backup vocalists do a great job and I really like "I've Got The World On A String." This number benefits from a fine, brassy musical arrangement. "That's Life," a number Frank Sinatra liked to sing, has Michael singing this very well; and it's just as enjoyable as when Frank sang it. The background vocalists are OK; but Michael didn't really need them for this number. I think "That's Life" would have sounded even better without the background chorus.

The album ends with Michael Bubl performing "Dream." "Dream" is a classic pop tune that Michael does with heart and soul every step of the way. "Dream" gets a solid treatment from Michael and it makes a good ending for this album.

Michael Bubl fans will, naturally, want this in their collections. Fans of classic pop vocals will also find a lot to like on this album.
