Product Description
Think of this long awaited studio album as if it were the first Pretenders record: musical turf that's defined by attitude, lyrical and melodic mastery, and the unexpected...and Chrissie Hynde's voice as you've always known it. "Break Up The Concrete" is an authentic slice of rock Americana, ranging from blistering punk to the most delicate storytelling as told by the queen of rock royalty herself.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Why The Pretenders Are In The Rock Hall Of Fame   October 7, 2008

"Break Up The Concrete" is a flawless and diverse CD that vindicates why Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Hame. Hynde has always been the heart and soul of this band and her wondrous and versatile vocals resonate with grandeur throughout a CD that includes rock, punk, country, folk and ballads. Her voice can be as forceful as an angry punk icon and as a tender as the most ethereal angel. "Boots Of Chinese Plastic" is a compelling and frenetic hit and the highly emotional and yearning "One Thing Never Changed" is one of the greatest songs in Pretenders' history. When Chrissie Hynde was busy with her vegetarian eatery in Akron, Ohio she also managed to somehow even enhance her sound as the greatest front-woman in Rock and Roll.

Chrissie Hynde, thanks for keeping it real.
The music is exceptional, everybody is tight, loose and together.
Lyrics just as brilliant.

I know I mentioned the guitars and the vocals..but don't let anyone know
but the drummer was brilliant too.

The mastering on this incredible. This is the best sound quality
I have ever heard from a standard cd.

great great album..nuff said.

Excellent First Listen. I am not a huge Pretenders Fan but have the utmost respect for Chrissie Hynde and her music. I am very impressed with the CD and would recommended it. It certainly is not like the classics but it is a very tight CD and well produced and might be a classic in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars This is a good album from the Pretenders   October 17, 2008

This is an excellent new album from the Pretenders. Chrissie still delivers superb vocals, even though her band is made of relatively new musicians. The best song on this album is "Love's a Mystery". Chrissie's vocals are great on this track. I love the pedal steel guitar playing by Eric Heywood on this tune. Heywood also performs on the track "The Nothing Maker". This is a pretty song that questions an individual's value to society. I also like the upbeat tracks "Boots Of Chinese Plastic" and "Don't Cut Your Hair". These songs really get me moving. I miss Martin Chambers on drums, but Jim Keltner does a good job replacing him here. Another highlight is the track "You Didn't Have To". This is a beautiful song featuring James Walbourne on the accordian. The Last Ride is an excellent song about friendship. I really like this song. "One Thing Never Changed" is a very touching song. I like the tenderness in Chrissie's voice here. This is a very entertaining album.

This album is everything you would expect it to be. Chrissie rises to the occasion with brilliant material and further cements herself as the reigning queen of rock and roll. VIVA The Pretenders!!!
