One of 2008's Best R&B Albums Easily October 2, 2008 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
Jazmine Sullivan caught my ear for the first time when I heard the exceptional first single from FEARLESS, "Need U Bad". The voice for me resurrected Lauryn Hill, who is one of my very favorite singers. Jazmine possesses soul in every song that she sings on FEARLESS, whether it is contemporary R&B or full on neo-/retro- soul favoring say Amy Winehouse. Face it, Jazmine can blow! This exceptionally consistent debut album that will probably be underrated as far as commercial sales ultimately is one of my favorite urban releases of 2008. Jazmine has successfully blended a plethora of styles and maintained sultry alto vocals all in the mix. There isn't a "flat" or bad song on FEARLESS in my mind.
"Bust Your Windows" opens the album brilliantly given and old school vibe the Mark Ronson could've easily produced for an Amy Winehouse album. In fact, here I believe Sullivan somewhat tries to embody that Etta James, Winehouse sound with her "extravagant" vocals. She sounds killer here that for sure. On "Need U Bad", Missy, as much as I hate to say it, isn't necessary at all as far as appearing on the track (yes she helped to write that brilliant song). Jazmine sounds fantastic with the tropical inspired beat supporting her. With that aside though, the track still sounds as if it could've easily appeared on a 70s soul album. "My Foolish Heart" keeps the momentum going with its great production work and with Jazmine's phenomenal vocal performance. "Lions, Tigers & Bears" keeps up the pace putting production absent of drums behind Ms. Sullivan. The result is vintage soul.
"Call Me Guilty" is great also, while "One Night Stand" is absolutely one of the best of FEARLESS. "After The Hurricane" is one of the best R&B ballads I've heard for sometime, while "Dream Big" is vintage Missy Elliott songwriting genius. Sure, it's a big clunky compared to some of the tracks, but it is still "great". "Live A Lie" is also strong, mostly because it is one of those R&B tunes where it is "out there" as far as the music theory behind it (for all the music nerds like me). "Fear" floats on by, though it is the soulful "In Love With Another Man" that steals the who as perhaps the VERY best ballad of FEARLESS. "Switch!" ends the album on a soulful, 70s pop-inspired high note.
This is nearly the perfect debut. The production doesn't sound cheap, even if it does sound like say, an Usher album. This album lays very well and vocally, Sullivan is phenomenal. Fantastic home run for Sullivan!
Strongest debut in '08 September 25, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Jazmine Sullivan has proven her validity with the breakout CD Fearless. Her relevance is something to take note because of her strong voice, delivery, and lyric content. Most of the songs on the CD evoke some kind of emotion (both past and present) for her listeners. While her voice tend to sometimes remind me of other artists, in my opinion she has carefully carved her own niche and has staying power.
12 Reasons to Buy Fearless
1) Bust Your Windows - Very strong opener. Contains infectious beat. Listener can get away with "busting windows" without the consequence of going to jail
2) Need U Bad - At some point this track has probably served as most people's song cry and yearning to be back with the one he/she loves regardless of how the relationship ended
3) My Foolish Heart - Vocals are reminiscent of A. Keys but are clearly stronger
4) Lions, Tigers & Bears - Metaphors are out of this world! Feels as if someone has taken a peak into MY life and created a beautiful song about it
5) Call Me Guilty - Another warning for those guys/girls who just won't do right. Lyrics are stronger than musical arrangement on this track
6) One Night Stand - Has a modern twist on the Motown sound. Jazmine has shared with her listeners how things are Supposed to happen but gets the rug pulled from underneath her
7) After the Hurricane - Arguably THE STRONGEST song on the album
8) Dream Big - Great anthem for those who have self-doubt
9) Live a Lie - This track is similar to Ne-Yo's "Lie To Me". Both are wanting to go back in time to a happier place in their respective relationships
10) Fear - Another track in which I enjoy the lyrics more than the song as a whole. My favorite line "You ain't human without fear"
11) In Love with Another Man - Another song cry for those who are stuck between two loves
12) Switch - Explores what we may all want to do at times...replace one guy/girl for his/her friend. Fun song
My Top 5 1. After the Hurricane 2. Need U Bad 3. Lions, Tigers & Bears 4. My Foolish Hear 5. One Night Stand
Love the album! September 23, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
First time in awhile that I bought a new album and didn't skip a song to see what's next! I enjoyed every song, particularly Bust your windows and One night stand (and of course Need U Bad) and I just like her, she seems real, not all fake and drama, she's refreshing. It moved me AND grooved me...lol. Worthwhile purchase. Really love it.
Fearless debut September 23, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Jazmine Sullivan's debut CD, "Fearless," is probably the best R&B CD to be released this year. Her voice is a throwback to ol' skool soul divas like Chaka Khan, Betty Wright, and even the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin. But the diva Jazmine is most compared to is the missing-in-action music Icon, Lauryn Hill. Since we've been waiting for like a decade for Ms. Hill's return, Jazze definately has what it takes to fill that soulful void. She has a raspy, soulful, and commanding voice llke L-Boogie's. She starts the CD off with the vengeful, scathing "Bust Your Windows." Then she moves to the reggae tinged first single, "Need U Bad," which has become a #1 smash on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Singles chart this summer. Then soul gems like "Lions, Tigers and Bears," "Call Me Guilty," "One Night Stand," and the emotional "In Love With Another Man" signals that Suliivan is an artist that's in it for the long haul, just like the legends listed above. Maybe Jazmine's fearlessness will inspire her soul counterparts to make their CDs just as inspired and "fearless" as hers.
I love it October 16, 2008 It's fresh and new she has a raspy jazzy voice favorite tracks "need you bad" "lions tigers and bears" "after the hurricane" "fear" and "in love with another man" I can groove to every song, not bad for first time around
