 Best Slipknot Album (if you are an open minded rock fan) August 27, 2008

Let me start with a few disclaimers about this album. If you are a one-dimensional rock fan whose entire music collection consists of a particular genre (i.e., metal ), then you are going to feel disappointed. Specifically, if you are one of the countless Slipknot "fans" obsessed with the Iowa album you will definitely hate this album. Guaranteed!!! If you like rock music in general (For example, I listen to various types of rock music...everything from Radiohead to Slayer and all in between) then you will really appreciate this album.
I will rate this album as their 2nd best; behind their self-titled debut album (the one that made me a Slipknot fan to begin with). Honestly, I always found Iowa to be a pretty boring album. Surely, it is their heaviest album, but the eternal screaming on every song made the record sound like a single long song. To the dislike of many, with Vol. 3, the band made a drastic change in their music, incorporating solos, adding more melodic choruses, and varying the tempo of the music in the whole album and withing songs.
With "All Hope is Gone", Slipknot has been able to capture the best elements of all their previous albums without sounding repetitive. They have continued to expand their sound and grow musically, which I greatly appreciate. In general, if you have liked the band's entire catalog, you will be rewarded with their best musical outing yet. If you still living in the past and thinking about Iowa, then look elsewhere.

I'm a fairly new Slipknot fan. I started with their live album and then worked my way backwards. Then I listened to All Hope is Gone and now I'm sold. I've noticed that with each album, Slipknot seemed to grow musically and lyrically. It's only so many times you can hear double bass drumming, heavily distorted guitars, and screaming lines before it gets worn out. I think All Hope is Gone has shown Slipknot's maturation into a metal band that can be lyrical, melodic and heavy at the same time. At first listen, I loved the album, but I thought to myself that the hardcore maggots were gonna hate it. If they do, then they really aren't true music fans. If you love a group, you can respect when they try to do something new and different. You may not always agree with the musical direction, but you can at least be appreciative of a band's willingness to try something different.
Overall, a great album!

After the breakup rumors which surrounded the band while touring in support of Vol. 3, people assumed that Slipknot were finished. Wasn't that the assumption after Iowa? People tried to write them off, and they failed. Here they are 4 years later with a new album, All Hope Is Gone. Produced by Dave Fortman (Evanescence, Mudvayne), and mixed by Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Trivium, Chimaira), the album features a lot of melodies like on Vol. 3, but it also manages to retain the heaviness of Iowa. If you felt that Vol. 3 was more of a Stone Sour record than a Slipknot record, you shouldn't be turned off by this. Comparing Slipknot and Stone Sour is like comparing apples and oranges. They may feature two of the same members, but they play different music. Remember, this is Slipknot. It's hard to confuse the two bands.
The special edition is worthy if you feel like shelling out a few extra bucks. It's basically a cd/dvd set housed in a nice big digipak. Careful when you open it up, there is no compartment to keep the booklet in. It'll fall right out. From what I understand, the booklet contains expanded artwork. It's a thick booklet, trust me. Pictures aplenty. You get three bonus tracks: 1 song leftover from the All Hope Is Gone sessions, a remix for Vermilion pt. 2, and a previously unreleased track called Til We Die. The DVD is something to watch. Expect it to be a continuation of Voliminal as it was filmed by Shawn Crahan, and it's in that style, however, you actually get some nice footage of the band in the studio. Band members faces are visible instead of blurred out, but it's not like there's any mystery as to what they look like especially if you've seen the interviews on the Voliminal dvd.
No question about it, Slipknot is back. Bring on the chaos.

My star rating is for the cd. I'm a huge fan of each album, so I'm coming from there. This one didn't let me down. As for the bonus dvd, it was clips with little dialogue, much like an artistic piece. I would rather have seen the band talking about the recording process. Even the parts when they play aren't very long. A lot of shots of a car stuck in mud, them walking in the giant masks, still no talking. Probably won't ever watch the thing again. It is about 35 minutes long total.

I've only listened once to this CD but I love it. C'mon, folks...Slipknot doesn't have to be growly and harsh to still be brutal. Corey's vocals are top form. He evokes so much emotion, and without screaming. This is a good thing, kiddies. Not to say that there's not screaming, but there seems to be less than other albums. I am a big fan of Subliminal Verses, and this seems to be another step in that direction. Deep insights and social commentary are what you get with this album. Good work boys!
