5 out of 5 stars A Satisfied Mind   September 20, 2008
27 out of 32 found this review helpful

"Money Can't Buy Back, All Your Youth When Your Old
A Friend When Your Lonely, Or Peace To Your Soul
The Wealthiest Person, Is A Pauper At Times
Compared To The Man, With a Satisfied Mind.' Hayes and Rhodes

No matter how you view Don Imus, he has an ear for music. He has brought an eclectic mix of country/rock n'roll/folk music, and some of the best singers of those worlds to sing on this DVD. It has been said Don Imus suggested particular songs to these artists, and in most cases he hit gold. Thirteen artists sing their hearts out for the Imus Ranch Project.

'Silver Springs' by Patty Loveless- the old Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac song is perfect for Ms. Loveless-timeless and effortless.

"Lay Down Sally" by Delbert McClinton-a fresh take on the old Eric Clapton tune.

'Mamas Don t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys' by Lucinda Williams- Lucinda could sing the phonebook and it would purr- she is magnificent with this Willie Nelson oldie.

'You Better Move On' by Levon Helm- Levon Helm is my hero and his rendition is toe tappin' and finger snappin' good-100% Levon.

'Life Has Its Little Ups And Downs' by Raul Malo-Raul Malo has one of the most mellow voices of today. I have the CD - an underrated singer of our times.

'I Ain t Never' by Little Richard-an old Mel Tillis tune, sung in a new fashion with a down to earth refreshing view.

'What A Difference A Day Makes' by Willie Nelson- a song Willie has not sung before and he puts elegance to the Dinah Washington tune.

'I Don 't See Me In Your Eyes Anymore' by Randy Travis-not his best work.

'You ve Got To Fight For Your Right To Party' by Big & Rich- way out of place here.

'Give Back The Key To My Heart' by Dwight Yoakam-love this rendition. The country twang is sooo right.

'What Happened' by Bekka Bramlett-I had not heard Bekka before this CD- what a gorgeous voice with this mournful tune.

'Welfare Music' by John Hiatt-great voice- John Hiatt is forever a fave-he gives this tune a lift with a toe tappin' quality.

'A Satisfied Mind' by Vince Gill-Porter Waggoner wrote the song and Vince Gill sang it for Imus's Project-lovely and poignant.

'A Satisfied Mind' sums up this CD eloquently.

'But one thing's for certain
When it comes my time
I'll leave this old world
With a satisfied mind
But little they know
That it's so hard to find
One rich man in ten
With a satisfied mind '

Highly Recommended. prisrob 09-20-08

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Great Cause   December 11, 2008

I must confess I love the I-Man. How can I not? He has devoted endless hours and countless millions to helping kids with cancer -- all while making me laugh so hard I shoot snot-rockets of coffee across the breakfast table. As a longtime Texan who got shanghaied to Washington, this CD brings me back to the best of real music. Lucinda Williams sings "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys" - and sounds like she's opening up for Janis at Threadgill's on a Saturday night. Raul Malo sings "Life Has Its Little Ups and Downs" for every working stiff who couldn't afford to buy his sweetie that new dress in the window of Baker's Department Store. John Hiatt gives a big F-you to "the fat man on the radio" in "Welfare Music." Dwight Yoakam sings to a driving beat in "Give Back the Keys to My Heart" and Vince Gill soars on "A Satisfied Mind", the song Porter Wagoner rode to Number One in 1955. Vince reportedly recorded it for Imus just hours after he sang it at Porter's funeral.

And then there are the legends. Willie Nelson and Levon Helm are Imus faves (and where I'm from if you don't believe in Willie you're an atheist.) They give it their all - with Willie caressing "What a Difference a Day Makes" and Levon ripping your heart out on "You Better Move On."

I've had this album since just before it came out (Imus slipped me an early copy back in October.) But now that the holidays are upon us I'm buying several more - for everyone who I love who loves great music. 100% of the proceeds go to help kids with cancer live the life of the American cowboy at the remarkable Imus ranch. Hell, my only criticism is, for this music and this cause, they ought to double the price.

5 out of 5 stars Complete circle with this purchase!!   September 17, 2008

Guess how many artists' would use their own money and time to create a song, record a song and sign off on profits from that song? Don't know?? Well, how 'bout this...ALL of the artists on the Imus Ranch Record did just that!!!!! Every song sung from the heart from every artist on this album is for charity. Here is an album that not only provides enjoyment to the purchaser just to listen to, but it provides even more enjoyment for the knowledge that ALL of the proceeds are going to charity. Complete circle of love. This is the way it is done. Imus and friends have found a way to once again enable all of us to give. Thank you Imus, Thank you artists.

This is an excellent album!! Great performances of very tasty selections! Little Richard is amazing, Raul Malo sings beautifully, Patty Loveless is wonderful, as always, Delbert is cool as ever, and Vince Gill performs a lovely, heartfelt tribute to Porter Wagoner. Buying this CD contributes to a very worthy cause, and listening to it is really enjoyable. Thanks to all the artists and to Don and Deidre Imus.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic   September 23, 2008

This record is flat out fantastic. To those fools who suggest that Levon Helms is too old they don't know that of which they speak. Not only is his contribution to this record fantastic, he still puts on one heck of a show. The whole album is great, but hese dopes knocking Levon got my Irish up. I predict this will stand as a greatest hits album as one song after another climbs the Charts! Lucinda is already on the way. How great is it to hear Little Richard again? Buy it you will enjoy it for sure. It dosn't hurt to help such a worthy charity also.
