Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
Extreme is a US Rock band that achieved popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some of Extreme's influences, Queen and Van Halen (the latter of which Gary Cherone would eventually join and later leave), are readily apparent from their music's multi-part vocal harmonies and electric guitar tone and instrumental techniques. The band lends the listener a sound that blends the genre of glam metal with the shredding guitar work of thrash metal. Being asked about their style, Extreme categorized their music as 'Funky Metal'. Extreme has released four studio albums, two EPs (in Japan) and two compilations since its formation. The band was one of the most successful of those from the early 1990s, selling over 10 million albums worldwide. Extreme rose to fame with its 1990 release Pornograffitti, which peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200.

5 out of 5 stars It's about time.   August 12, 2008

One of the most underrated bands of all time is back with a new album. Extreme's Saudades De Rock is the type of album I have been waiting for. Straight up rock! It does not try to reinvent the wheel, yet manages to sound fresh and fun. Gary's vocals are a bit raspy this time around but I like it as it fits the style of music they are now playing. Nuno is great on lead guitar as usual. Pat Badger tears it up on base. Pat has always been a great bass player but has been overshadowed by Nuno through the years. New Drummer Kevin is the perfect fit and gives Extreme a new dimension that they have never had before. Admittedly this album takes a few listens to really catch on but once it does there is no stopping it. Fans of the band or just plain ol' great rock and roll should pick this up.

1) Star - 6/10 - I can't get past the chorus. I love the rest of the song. Not the best way to start off the album but many other fans I know love it.

2) Comfortably Dumb - 10/10 - Love this song. I read that it has grown on some. This was great to me on listen #1.

3) Learn to Love - 10/10 - WOW! Just WOW! First time I listened I thought it was good but now every time I hear it I just get pumped. My fav. Chorus on the album.

4) Take Us Alive- 8/10 - First off this is a GREAT Live song! Loved it in concert. Rockabilly is alive and well.

5) Run - 8/10 - A lot of people like this song and think it' the best on the album. Not my fav. but a good tune.

6) Last Hour - 8/10 - A great rock/blues song that takes some time to catch.

7) Flower Man - 7/10 - This sounds like Nuno's Solo work.

8 ) King of the Ladies - 8/10 - A fun rock, almost hip/hop song that shoul never be taken too seriously.

9) Ghost - 8.5/10 - An Almost perfect ballad
.
10) Slide - 10/10 - took a bit but I LOVE this song.

11) Interface - 6/10 - I never cared for this song when it was done by Dramagods. But it is growing on me. First listen of this song by Dramagods or Extreme I would have given it a 3/10. So it has grown on me but I don't think it will much more.

12) Sunrise - 8/10 - It's a really good rock song that sounds nothing like the rest of the album. I may end up loving this one.

13) Peace - 8.5/10 - I nice way to end a great album.

14) Bonus track (americocaine demo) No rating because it's not really part of the album.

As a whole I would give this album 9/10. Not perfect but close.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Wait ... TENFOLD!!!   August 27, 2008

Though it unfortunately took 13 years, Extreme seems to have continued to evolve and grow like they did on each of their previous 3 releases (I, II, III, and now Saudades) - all the while never losing their core identity.
First, Saudades has that all important essential ingredient that almost all great music has to possess - the need to grow on you through a number of runs through the whole track list. I remember the first few runs through III Sides after being high on Porno - almost a feeling of disappointment that it wasnt simply an extension of Porno ... it wasnt long until III Sides became "better" than Porno ... likewise, the same with Punchline versus III Sides - though I do believe they may have went *slightly* too raw on Punchline.
I would have given Saudades 6 stars if available, and its still growing on me every run through.
Actually, Saudades is somewhat bittersweet for me ... as much as I'll definitely enjoy the hell out listening to this for some time, the more disenchanted I will become with where the whole music scene is today - because I know in today's music climate, it will be almost impossible for Saudades to get the exposure it absolutely deserves in the general mainstream public ... I feel sorry for the folks who will not be exposed to this music, and I feel sorry for the band not being able to reach all those who most likely would be turned on with this music.

THANK YOU EXTREME ...

Just saw them in Syracuse Ny , having had the CD for a week, and the new songs held up to the old. That says a lot. TAKE US ALIVE should be on the charts. RUN is classic pop, Doobie Brothers meets Cheap Trick, but all EXTREME. INTERFACE is in the MORE THEN WORDS slot. GARY,S vocals are very emotional and rank up there with any vocalist around. NUNO gets justified praise for his speed on the frets but I think he scores more with less sometimes. He is fantastic, no doubt. KEVIN , newest member of the band , is the drummer they need. He can do it all. All THREE vocalists combine for great harmonies reminisant of the FAB 3 (SORRY RINGO) It's in my car and in my home. It exciting to be excited by an entire CD!

This is the disc that should've followed 3 Sides. Everytime I listen, I like it more. It's good to see they have gone back to providing a lot of variety on a disc which I think is something the radio generated bands lack. It's a refreshing, in-your-face, creative bunch of tunes that I will surely not be getting tired of anytime soon.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!!   August 13, 2008

After almost 15 years, we finally get a new Extreme album, and it was absolutely worth the wait! This is the Extreme that true fans love, and they play to their strengths. Funky, metal, unison riffs , tight harmonies and ridiculous solos abound on this record. Count me as one of the many disappointed fans when they failed to reunite on that VH1 show. But after listening to this record, all is forgiven. Sure, I picked up all of Nuno's solo stuff, and even Van Halen III. And while those were good standing on their own, there's just something that seems so right about hearing Gary singing over Nuno and Pat's work...like this is the way it should have been all along.

I downloaded this from Amazon this morning, and have listened to it twice already. Nuno's riff and solo work makes you want to pick up the guitar, even if you can't emulate the solo work. The riffs are so emotive, you can really feel what each song is trying to convey. Gary's vocals seem rougher, and less operatic than all of their previous work...fantastic! And what can you say about Pat's bass work? He plays the same difficult riffs as Nuno, on thicker, heavier strings, and just as smoothly.

The only advice I can give about this album is to buy it right now. Please pay for this one, no freeloading. If you're on this page, you're a real Extreme fan anyway. It's one of their very best albums. It'll be worth your while, for sure.
