Works as advertised March 18, 2007 81 out of 85 found this review helpful
The procedure is to install the included software on your XP PC, run Easy Transfer there, then connect your XP computer with your new Vista PC, and the Vista computer will automatically detect the connection and ask you if you want to run Easy Transfer.
The process is not automatic, and you should pick which items you want to transfer (from the XP computer) rather than let the program choose the automatic settings. For one thing, using the automatic settings, the program will sooner choose to transfer your temporary internet files than it will your Outlook contacts. Also beware, the program will not give you an option to choose where on the Vista computer your files are going, it will put them in the same place that they were located on your XP computer. If you had partitioned your XP computer and stored content on your D drive, the program will try to move the chosen files to your D drive on your Vista computer, even if your Vista computer doesn't have a D drive, which will make the transfer fail. Generally, anything that you want to move from your XP computer must be copied to the C drive before transferring.
The Easy Transfer program will show transfer progress on both computers, though when the process was failing, the progress being shown on the Vista computer lagged behind that of the XP PC, when it fact, files had stopped being transferred because there was no more room on the Vista computer (my Vista computer had a tiny D drive used for system recovery). I wasted time as the transfer looked to have slowed down but in fact had stopped and the Easy Transfer program didn't tell me it had stopped.
I would have given less than 5 stars because of these quirks, but the cable worked so well once I had figured it out, that it still earned the 5 stars. Especially with the included bonus laplink utility program described below.
The cable also comes with a laplink utility that lets you connect two PC's (including Vista PC's) in order to transfer files between them. To use this capability, you need to install the laplink program on both computers being connected (but it only needs to be run from one of them).
Before I acquired this cable, I had a hard time transferring the files I wanted, with my prior attempts using a hard drive enclosure, flash cards, and CD's. (I put my XP computer hard drive into a hard drive enclosure and tried to transfer my files through a USB port, but either the enclosure wasn't supported by Vista, or the old hard drive had a file structure that wasn't recognized by Vista). So using a hard drive enclosure didn't work for me. But this cable saved my bacon.
Easy for XP to Vista IF you follow instructions August 26, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Despite reading many negative reviews about the Belkin Easy Transfer cable, I decided to risk it. It was a painless experience. I did make sure of several things: 1. I was transferring from an XP machine to a Vista (which is what the packaging says the cable's for, though I didn't see that statement on the Amazon website). 2. I loaded proprietary software on my Vista machine prior to performing the transfer (e.g., MS Office, including MS Outlook). 3. I loaded the belkin software only on the old (XP) machine 4. I followed the onscreen instructions (windows has a transfer wizard that automatically starts and helps guide you).
It even flawlessly transferred all of my information for my home network. I just plugged in my network cable and my new Vista machine worked as well as my XP had.
I'm a very happy customer.
Quick & Simple transfer from XP to Vista October 17, 2007 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I was leery after the negative reviews, but couldn't have experienced any smoother transfer of data. I have transferred from both my laptop and my old desktop to the new computer without a hitch. I did appreciate the other feedback to install the program CD on the XP computer only. I did this, and then connected the cable, and all went VERY smoothly. I only wish I had purchased this BEFORE I had tried to save a few dollars and transfer the data manually. The hour it took to transfer with the cable was well worth the $28 for the cable, and would have saved me more than 12 hours of attempting program and data transfer with the flash drives. I had an excellent experience and reccommend this.
Don't believe naysayers; fantastic application September 17, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I hesitated to buy after reading the naysayers' reviews, but the prospect of being able to transfer all my files was too much of a temptation to resist. I gave it a try, and not only did it transfer gigs and gigs of files in a short time (an hour or so), but it was then able to transfer my Outlook emails, contacts, and connection settings from the old computer. Incredible! What a timesaver and stress saver. Follow the instructions and you should have no trouble. I do suggest choosing the Advanced menu option, to select the specific files or settings to transfer. I also suggest transferring file folders as a batch, and settings separately. I did this and had no troubles at all. I consider this to be one of the best software/hardware innovations since the original PC. Connectivity at last :)
Works great with bundled PcSync software. August 27, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Doesn't work so great with the Microsoft MigWiz software. You would think that a Microsoft product created to transfer information between Microsoft machines would operate flawlessly, right? Wrong. I'll not get into the particulars of locking up and having to restart and all that, but I will tell you that the PcSync software that comes bundled with this transfer cable, simply rocks.
Take my advice, just install the PcSync software; it works on an FTP like transfer protocol that is smooth and painless, and pretty much as quick as any FTP upload/download. Not familiar with FTP? No worries, it works like any other transfer software, i.e. cd/dvd burning software. Drag from the old file to the new file and you're golden.
Great cable. Just make sure that you get it from Amazon for the $24.77 price tag. I didn't, and it cost me $54.00 @ Office Depot, but I needed it immediately.
