Amazon.com Who but Ringo Starr could get away with a syrupy lyric like this: "When I look back / It sure was cool / For those four boys from Liverpool?" The wrap-up line is from "Liverpool 8," the title song from the drummer's autobiographical 14th album: of Rory Storm, of Hamburg, and of John, Paul, and George. Like most Ringo efforts, it won't win any songwriting accolades, but it can be just plain fun. Teaming with longtime collaborator Mark Hudson and producer Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), Starr belies his 67 years with still-solid drumming and an adolescence not far removed from "Octopus's Garden." Emphasis here should be placed on the barroom request "Harry's Song," as well as the seductively Spanish "Pasodobles" and a campy, banjo-led "RU Ready." With its infectious chorus--"Someone's there to catch you when you're ready to let go"--the latter could be a holdover from the Beatles' White Album and confirms that, be it 1968 or 2008, when you ask for Ringo, it's Ringo you get. --Scott Holter

Album Description 2008 album from the legendary Ringo Starr, his first album of new recordings with Capitol/EMI since 1974. 12 new tracks, written and produced by Ringo Starr and Dave Stewart, and "refers to the section of Liverpool where I used to live," explains Ringo. "The song was actually Dave Stewart's idea, as a mini autobiographical travelogue: 'I was a sailor first' and then, 'Liverpool I left you' - because I did. 'but I never let you down,' which is true."

Ringo just keeps getting better with age! February 16, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Like a good wine, Ringo just seems to keep getting better with age. His last few efforts going back to 1998's Vertical Man saw a creative rebirth of his talent. He then followed that up with Ringo Rama (and his beautiful tribute to George Harrison, "Never Without You"). His personality, charm and sly humor really came through on that CD, not to mention some flat out rocking tunes. Not to be outdone, in 2005 he released 'Choose Love' which was more or less in the same vein as Ringo Rama, choosing and writing some excellent material that could have been RR-part 2. Now comes Liverpool 8, where he expands on the formula that was present on his two previous efforts. Nostalgic, irreverent, fun and the continual propulsion of the back beat that we've know for 45 years, pardon the pun, hasn't missed a beat. Both he and George were overshadowed in that other band they played in, and if either he or George were in another band, they easily would have been leaders. Liverpool 8 doesn't travel far from the 60's inspired peace and love themes, but like McCartney asked in 'Silly Love Songs', "What's wrong with that"? It's a testament to the man's (often underrated) talent that he can produce fresh, vibrant and creative music, and the age of 67! Do yourself a favor and get this CD, sit back, enjoy and just have fun. There are no deep life-altering lyrics (OK, Ringo I really love ya, but deep lyrics haven't always been your strong suit--sorry) but just listen to one of the great masters doing what he does best, and it sounds like he's having a great time doing it. Keep them coming Ringo, we love ya!
Ringo love notes March 3, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Ringo's love message is so welcome! His easy listening style and good 'ol, heart felt lirics make this a real keeper. Some tunes on the CD are not my favorite but many are winners. "You've got to love every breath you breathe, look at the sky and believe, smile a little more as life goes by, with love in your eye, just give it a try." That's worth the whole CD right there! Many sing alongs that are easy to learn. Have fun with this one.
Ringo Continues to Amaze February 14, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Liverpool 8 continues the string of quality Ringo Starr albums, starting with "Time Takes Time". This album is full of catchy tunes, and Ringo's drumming is outstanding. His voice, which is not known as a strength, seems to get better with age. Liverpool 8 is crisply produced, the musicianship is excellent, and it is a very fun listen. Ringo's albums are best when they have a wide variety of styles, and Liverpool 8 delivers. One of his top 5 albums.
Ringo is doing pretty good these days February 28, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Some people have been putting down Ringo's Liverpool 8 album, but I think he's done a fine job. The title song is quite good, and is a memorable tune. Another track, Gone Are The Days, is a great song and deserves a single release of its own. There are a couple songs that seem a little out of place, but the overall variety of his album makes it most interesting. I enjoy playing it all the way through every time I put the CD on. Ringo has, at times, been a tough ex-Beatle for fans to get in to, but this album shows he still has what it takes to hold an audience.
Ringo is being Ringo - full of peace and love February 12, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Whoever rates this CD and is not a fan of the Fab Four, please do us all a favor and get lost. To appreciate "Liverpool 8" and all of the Ringo CDs, you should have Beatle blood. No way can you intelligently rate this CD if you are not a fan of the greatest band that ever lived...and please stop comparing Ringo to John and Paul...that's not fair to Ringo. He may not be Keith Moon or John Bonham or Neil Pert, but Ringo can hold his own a. He may not write many songs, but he may be the most colorful performer you would ever see. Does he sing great? No....but what rocker did you ever hear having a great voice? His voice is good but he's a Beatle. You hear him sing "Liverpool 8" and you can just hear him sing "Act Naturally", "Yellow Submarine", "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Don't Pass Me By", "Goodnight" or "Octopus Garden"....it's that very cool distinctive low voice. From "It Don't Come Easy" to "Photograph", "Wrack My Brain", to 2008, Ringo is being Ringo and ya gotta love him. Besides the title track, listen to "Give It A Try" and "Love Is"....Love is Ringo
