My Daughter Loves It October 21, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
My five year old begged for this for her birthday. After reading all the bad reviews of the deluxe set I was reluctant, but it ended up being great. True, the pen is worthless--we just used our fingers (except the sticky retrieval eraser thing), but it's good for developing motor skills. It requires adult help to teach how, but now she can do it herself and loves it. They worked great. I read that they fall apart, so I just told her to handle them gently so they won't break and they have all stayed together.
She loves it and thinks it's super fun. It works perfectly if you just follow these tips:
1. Keep everything dry as you're working with it. Spray it away from the rest of the beads. Make sure your hands are dry. 2. Use A LOT of water to spray them and let them dry for day. 3. Don't expect your child to do it alone right away. Help teach them first. 4. Tell your child to handle them gently after they are dry, they aren't super durable.
Two things to know November 14, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
These sets work great but two things need to be remembered. For some children under 8 this toy can be frustrating as it requires very fine motor skills and patience to work with very small objects. the pen does work but requires some practice to know how much pressure is needed to release a bead. Second you need to use alot more water then they recommend and then let it dry for a day or two to really get a good bond. Just a few sprays like they suggest is usually not enough time to get the pixos sticky enough to be able to bond to each other.
Actually really fun! November 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My daughter received this for her 6th birthday. I had seen the awful reviews online and did not hold out a lot of hope for the product. But, she loves it and it actually works fairly well. Yes, it is true that the designs take some time to dry. We have found that the designs work best when allowed ample amount of time to dry; we've been putting them outside. And, as previous reviewers have commented, the designs need more water than one would think to stick together; we've actually had to spray a couple of them twice to get the entire design to stick. Overall, the designs take about 45 to 90 minutes to dry.
Take note that we've had this product less than 24 hours and we are already out of Pixos. 500 dots is not a lot. My daughter made about 8-10 3" designs and we now need refills, so purchase some refills in advance!
Overall, we really enjoy this activity and it has kept my daughter occupied for hours.
Fun but Forget the Pen August 29, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
My kids (and I) enjoy making Pixos, but we don't use the pen. We found it too hard to dispense the beads. Also, we let the creations dry for longer than ten minutes, otherwise they came apart and everyone got frustrated after all the time painstakingly placing the beads by hand. You don't need the expensive machine which is really nothing more than an elaborate way to hold a pen - which doesn't work very well in the first place. It says on the package ages 4 and up, but I can't imagine a four or five year old being able to do this with precision.
pixos starter kit November 30, 2008 My 10 year old daughter bought this product. She really enjoys making the projects. I agree with the other reviewers about the pen, its useless. You can put the pixos on the template easier by hand. Sometimes the pixos get stuck in the pen and you have to give it a shake to get it out and then it may not land where you want it to or you might click it again thinking one didnt come out and then 2 fall out. I suggest doing it by hand. The pixo tool on the other end of the pen is neat tho. It's kinda tacky and picks up the pixos if you put them in the wrong place or used the wrong color. I dont think it is for younger kids unless they have a lot of patience and enjoy taking time to make a project. My daughter sprayed a lot of water on her creations and some of them did come apart but we didnt try and wait a day. She waited a few hours. We'll wait longer before picking them up to see if that helps. There are different templates for different creations so you have to make sure you use the right ones or your beads wont line up correctly. My daughter came to me saying one creation she was making was really hard, but I soon discovered that she had simply used the wrong template for her card and she had to redo it.
