Best Phone I have Ever Owned ;) March 4, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Recently, my boyfriend and I decided to get an AT&T family plan and we chose these phones due to the fact that they had the best features of all of the AT&T phones, other then the iPhone of course. The W580i has great reception, an FM radio, mp3 and video functionality with a memory card, 2 megapixel camera, mobile messaging, bluetooth, and comes with its own head phones which function as a head set. I've never been happier with the functionality and reception of my phone at the same time. For the price here, I'd take this phone over the iPhone any day, keeping in mind that I don't need a phone with extensive internet capabilities. The only issue I can see with the phone is that the key pad is relatively small. It's probably a good idea to check one out in a store if you think this might be an issue for you.
Additionally, My boyfriend and I have had the phones for over 4 months now and we've had no issues with the durability. I keep reading reviews on how these phones feel cheap and the keypads break, but it just hasn't been the case with our two at all. Our first impression was that the phones *felt* like they weren't durable. But, experience has shown that the ones we own are. And to be honest, I drop my phone *a lot*. The battery cover popped off once or twice but I popped it back on.
I love this phone.
Great combination phone/MP3 player March 15, 2008 I've had my w580i for a couple of weeks now and am quite pleased.
Pros + Call sound quality is good. Battery life is simply amazing -- can use the phone regularly (phone and Walkman features) and easily not have to power up for the whole week. + Phone comes with all of the adapters, power cords, jacks you will ever need. + Large, clear, bright screen. + Phone itself is highly customizable: *tons* of free content out there in terms of themes, ringtones, Java games, etc. All are easily installed with the free, downloadable software. If you know how to use a freeware MP3 editor, you can also make your own ringtones quite easily (simply needs to be 30 seconds or less). + All file transfer and productivity software for the phone is not only free to download from the Sony Ericsson site, but elegantly designed and easy to use for anyone with a PC (not sure about Mac) and moderate computer skills. (Grandma might have a problem, but you certainly won't need a degree in Computer Science, either.) + With the PC suite, the sync with Microsoft Outlook calendar and contacts is seamless and lightning fast. Huge selling point for me. With the media software, photos resize automatically for optimal storage and viewing on the phone. Very nice. Music transfers are perfectly intuitive. + I bought this phone because I needed to replace my Ipod and wasn't happy with any of the MP3 choices currently out there. With a memory card purchased separately, YOU CAN USE THIS PHONE AS AN AMAZINGLY SATISFYING MP3 REPLACEMENT, especially if you are okay with smaller capacity nano-style players (2, 4, or 8GB). The walkman interface is well-designed and intuitive. Plays all sorts of file types without issue, including AAC. Great for a former Ipod user. + Following up on the last point, the Walkman sound quality is surprisingly high. I should preface that comment by saying that I'm not an audio-snob; lossless-only listeners would be more discerning. But I do have a better than average ear and can't stand poor sound quality. Lows and mids are warm without being muddy; highs are crisp without being tinny. Very little noise. There is even a decent, customizable equalizer.
Cons - Need to buy a memory card to store music. This is less of a "con" than a "too bad," because it means that one needs to pay an extra $40-100 for the memory capacity to store music. That said, the phone works flawlessly with a compatible card -- no weirdness whatsoever. I bought a Sandisk 8GB micro card for ~$90 through Amazon, which works perfectly. 2 and 4GB cards cost much less. - No standard headphone jack. Again, not a big deal, and the adapter that comes with the phone works just fine. But it's something extra to carry around. Ideally I'd be able just to plug in my headphones without the adapter. (The phone does come with its own set of fairly decent earbuds with the proprietary jack and a microphone.) - The phone does feel fragile, as others here have mentioned. I've had no problems whatsoever, but I also feel the need to baby this thing as much as I possibly can to prolong its life. If you're hard on your gadgets, you might consider something else.
Excellent April 14, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Overall: The phone has performed with near perfection. Every essential element works flawlessly.
Call Quality: Great. No static or interference in calls. Volume is great, and speakerphone works acceptably well.
Battery Life: Superb. The battery life has only barely decreased over four months. It performs at least as well as slated. In my experience, it lasts two days under fairly heavy usage. Additionaly, the battery can fully charge in about an hour. So a thirty minute charge can last you a busy day easily.
Screen: Excellent. Very crisp and clear. Easy to read and very vibrant. Also very sturdy, this is the place that you stick your thumb to slid the phone apart, so it recieves some pressure, so far it has caused zero problems.
Functionality: Very easy to use, menus are extremely intuitive, controls are ergonomic. One thing I have noticed when using other phones is how much better the menus on this phone look, they are attractive and clear. The additional memory is a little pricy, but performs beautifuly. I have had no snags in it's usage. In the way of durability, this phone is great. When shopping, I was afraid the sliding part of the phone may be fragile, but I have been thoroughly impressed with it's resilience.
Walkman: Good. Easy to use. Songs can be loaded on without any headache, although slightly slow. The sound quality is decent at best. However, I believe to the casual ear, the sound will be up to par. Included ear buds are better than expected. Included are multiple sizes to fit any persons ear.
Camera: Great. 2 megapixels is above industry standards, but don't expect your pictures to be photographer quality, fine details are non existent. Plenty of options and good funtionality. Night shot, variable quality levels, and shot styles (panoramic, burst, etc.).
Messaging and Internet Usage: Text messaging is easier on this phone than any other I have used. I cannot tell you much about internet usage, as I do not use it often. From what I have seen, it is pretty standard, and considering how everything else performs, I am confident this is too.
In Summary, everything on this phone is great. There are about five million other things on this phone, like a trivia game, that will keep you entertained for a long time. There is no reason not to buy this phone.
Best phone I've had April 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very good phone, small but mighty. It's a little bit one the fragile side, but i dont forsee myself having any problems with it. I do text alot and no probs with the keys, the slide could be a bit tighter however. Best screen i've seen on a phone, crisp and bright. Battery lasts for days and days, depending on how much i use it, i've gone 4 days with maybe 5 texts and 2 calls per day, or 2 days with me playing games on it for a good 4 hours at work one boring day. i did de-brand it to fix the At&t programming it came with... the side lights staying green no matter what, and the internet button is to easily pushed, but now the lights stay blue and the internet button is now a convienent shortcuts button. And debranding also alowed full mp3s to be used as ringtones instead of 30sec max thanks to att. Call quality is great, speakers are loud and crisp. easy to navigate, and the camera is great. the only problem with the camera is lack of flash, but i will survive. I'd reccomend it to the intermediate or advanced cellphone user, but i'd get something a little less packed full of options for a starter phone.
I am so IN LOVE with this phone!! October 2, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
