Great player January 31, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Bought this quite a few months ago and have been running as many BDs (oh, DVDs and CDs as well) thru it as humanly possible. So far it's worked like a champ...no burps, farts, or hiccups. The BD load times are the shortest I've seen.....and I've watched quite a few at our local Best Buy outlet. Firmware updates are snap with the USB port (performed one the day I hooked it up). Physically it's easy on the eyes...not gorgeous, but it fits in fine with my "AV decor". That really doesn't matter to me, but to some it's a critical issue. The sub $300 price is the clincher for this one. Will it be upgradeable to meet the BD 1.1 compliance parameters? Don't know...but I'd guess probably not. It won't be a total tragedy if it's not.....I'm not a big disk "extras" guy. It still would be nice if this box was designed to accept a 1.1 firmware upgrade....maybe someone out there can comment more on this**. Anyway, it's a fine BD player and to this point I'm extremely satisfied.
** Well, just read that BD profile 1.1 is not something that can be achieved via a firmware upgrade....that's too bad, but like I said above, is something I can live with (it will be time to upgrade in a few years anyway!). If anyone finds out this is incorrect please pass the info on!
Sharp Aquos BDHP20U 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player February 13, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a superb Disk Player!! I've had mine about 2 months with GREAT RESULTS! Of course the Blu-Ray playback is awesome. Boot-up is fairly fast also! Beyond that, it really does a great job upconverting my original DVD's to have a MUCH sharper picture than before. Wether or not Blu-Ray wins out in the HD DVD market, (although I believe Blu-Ray will), I have absolutely awesome movie playback. And now I can choose to buy or rent Blu-Ray HD, or regular DVD, depending on the movie type. Certain movies should ONLY BE VIEWED IN HIGH-DEF!! This player can't be beat for the price!
Blu-Ray January 7, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this product for 299.99, stunning colors and great all around picture quality, even the dvd upscaling makes my non Blu-ray dvd's look great. I haven't tried to play any audio cd' on them but if some of you are having problems go to the sharp website and maybe the software updates may help. The mounting time of the dvds seem slow but I guess thats par for HD or Blu-ray players. I would definitley recommend this produSharp Aquos BDHP20U 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Playerct.
Guess I got lucky May 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After reading some of the negative reviews of this player, I was a bit leery about purchasing it and withheld comment until I'd put a good 50 hours on it. But the Sharp works just dandy. It arrived in basically plug-and-play configuration. It plays DVDs and my audio CDs flawlessly, even tracking a few abused discs that kicked themselves out of my old machine. I am not using the HDMI output as my Olevia TV supports only the Y Pb Pr connectors, but darn, that's a pretty picture!!! I have watched a couple of Blu-Ray discs on it without a single hang. The machine has a solid feel to it, and so far has been a pleasure. There's a firmware update out there; I downloaded it to a stick as instructed but was unable to install. Any ideas? Something about reformatting the stick first in FAT format; I presume this is a Microsoft/Windows thing which my Mac is not interested in doing. I'm listening to an Iris Dement audio CD as I type this. The Sharp has brought a new brilliance to my CD collection, and the Blu-Ray version of Letters from Iwo Jima has a remarkable clarity. So maybe I got lucky, and in a month I'll hate this thing, but so far so good. I'd recommend this machine to anyone.
Sharp Aquos trumps Samsung P1500 June 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Returned Samsung P1500 for Sharp Aquos HP20U. OMG - what a difference. Biggest problems with P1500: 1 - No second digital audio source. Already using Optical for TV digital sound and amp only has one, but Sharp had a Coax Digital that matched up perfectly (like my upconvert had done), 2 - Sharp plays DVD+R, +RW -- Samsung does not (I needed this function), 3 - Sharp remote is much better designed, easier to read and use, 4 - Sharp has much better on-screen menus
Output quality is similar, so far. First night out Samsung hung twice and had to be restarted. Load times seem similar, too, but Sharp can be set to make them ever faster.
