a classic randy newman record October 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's a very good disc with beautifull songs. Fantastic well-known irony, beautifull arrangements, orchestration, it's all there.
Feels like home to me, too September 17, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Randy Newman's humor was what led me to him in the first place. Well, that and his New Orleans laid back piano.
From the opening title song, "Harps and Angels" had me laughing. Randy's back with his ironic wit and I'm glad to hear it.
I admit, I don't always agree with his politics, but Randy's basic sentiments about life are still grand. And I'll never dispute his right to say what he feels--particularly to a funky Dixie beat.
My favorites:
Laugh and be Happy Harps and Angels

Too Long Coming September 4, 2008 In the nine years since Randy Newman released his last album, he's grown older, wiser, and more liberal. Just the kind of guy I like. This is probably the album of the year from the opening "Harps and Angels," in which a man has a near-death experience and goes to tell his friends about it, to "Only a Girl," the true story of a May-September love affair.
Using New Orleans rhythms and excellent orchestration, this album is a classic. he even includes two slow love songs, the new "Losing You," which is classic Newman and "Feels Like Home," first introduced on his album "Faust." Buy it. No CD collection is complete without it.
It's Randy Newman September 12, 2008 And you take that for what its worth. If you love Rand (and I do), then this is a great purchase, falling in with maybe his less celebrated stuff, but absolutely the next logical step. As always, the music is gifted and complex, while the lyrics have the satire and bite that you've come to expect.
And hey, after a decade, any Randy Newman is good Randy Newman...
just great September 23, 2008 I saw RN last year solo & it was great & he did a few cuts off what would be H & A. This is a solid effort better that Bad Love from 1999...Froom's production is much better on this recording. The title track is an instant classic. Newman's pop recordings have been few & far between the last 20 years but always worth the wait. Not a week offering here & nice in a short LP length recording (less IS more-NO FILLER)...equally as good as Brian Wilson's most recnt offering (if not better)& Lindsey Buckingham's.
